The Shire of Yarrawonga was a local government area on the Murray River, in the Goulburn Valley region, about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1891 until 1994. History Yarrawonga was once part of the vast Echuca Road District, which formed in 1864 and becoming a shire in 1871. It extended along the south bank of the Murray River, from Mount Hope Creek in the west, to the Ovens River in the east. Originally, Yarrawonga was part of the Shire of Tungamah, which, confusingly, was originally called the Shire of Yarrawonga, when it was first incorporated on 15 May 1878. On 17 April 1891, the East Riding, which contained the town of Yarrawonga, was severed and incorporated as the Shire of North Yarrawonga. Goulburn Valley
The Goulburn Valley is a sub-region, part of the Hume region of the Australian state of Victoria. The sub-region consists of those areas in the catchment of the Goulburn River and other nearby streams, and is part of the Murray-Darling Basin. Boomahnoomoonah is a locality in the Shire of Moira local government area. On Boomahnoomoonah Road, approximately 12 km southeast of Yarrawonga, Victoria, it was once a small town having its own school, church and post office. Comprising medium to large farms the area is predominantly agricultural, focusing on dairying as well as sheep and cattle grazing. Some viticulture is also practised. "Boomahnoomoonah" is the longest single-word place name in Victoria. Early history The Victorian Aborigines are the traditional owners of the land; in particular the Bangerang people, a family group of the Yorta Yorta people who occupied a large area along the Murray river. Peechelba is a town in north eastern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Rural City of Wangaratta and the Shire of Moira local government area between Wangaratta and Yarrawonga and north west of the state capital, Melbourne. The Shire of Cobram was a local government area on the Murray River in the Goulburn Valley region, about north of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1953 until 1994. History The Shire of Cobram's origins lay in the North West Riding of the Shire of Tungamah, which was first incorporated on 15 May 1878. Cobram's development arose from irrigation projects developed in the 1930s; after World War II, returned servicemen were allocated irrigated holdings for fruit orchards and dairy farms, and Italian immigrants also took up land in the area.
