The Shire of Nathalia was a local government area on the Murray River in the Goulburn Valley region, about north of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1879 until 1994. History Nathalia was once part of the vast Echuca Road District, which was formed in 1864 and became a shire from 1871. It extended along the south bank of the Murray River, from Mount Hope Creek in the west, to the Ovens River in the east. It was first incorporated in its own right as the Shire of Shepparton on 30 May 1879. The southeastern section containing Shepparton itself split away on 18 September 1884, and was initially known as the Shire of South Shepparton. On 11 April 1885, the Shire of Shepparton was renamed ''Numurkah'', and South Shepparton was renamed ''Shepparton'' some months later. Goulburn Valley
The Goulburn Valley is a sub-region, part of the Hume region of the Australian state of Victoria. The sub-region consists of those areas in the catchment of the Goulburn River and other nearby streams, and is part of the Murray-Darling Basin. The Goulburn Valley is bordered on the south by the Great Dividing Range and to the north by the Murray River, the state border with New South Wales. The sub-region is one of Australia's most productive and intensively farmed areas and is predominantly irrigated. The City of Echuca was a local government area in Victoria, Australia, about north of Melbourne, the state capital. Based around the regional centre of Echuca, along the Murray River, the city covered an area of , and existed from 1865 until 1994. History The Borough of Echuca was incorporated on 3 January 1865, and became a city on 1 March 1965, just after its centenary celebrations. On 18 November 1994, the City of Echuca was abolished, and along with the Town of Kyabram, the Shires of Deakin, Rochester and Waranga, and some neighbouring districts, was merged into the newly created Shire of Campaspe. Waaia ( ) is a town in northern Victoria, Australia in the Shire of Moira local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. The area is home to mainly irrigated dairy farms. At the , Waaia and the surrounding area had a population of 390 up from 376 in 2011. Waaia was established in the late 1880s to cater for the increasing rural population of the surrounding area following the opening of the railway line in October 1888, and a Post Office opened on 17 December that year. Picola, Victoria
Picola is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, from the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Picola had a population of 334. Picola Post Office opened on 24 August 1878 and closed in late 2010. The Australia Post outlet was then taken over by the Picola Hotel, until early 2011. The hotel remains a community postal agent. The Picola Hotel offers a variety of services, from meals and functions, weekly raffles, and is now the local milk bar, community postal agent and V/Line ticket agency. The railway to Picola opened in 1896, and until the line closed in 1986, the town was a railhead for loading of wheat and livestock from the local area, and timber from the nearby Barmah National Park. Barmah is a town in the state of Victoria, Australia. Barmah has the distinction of being located north of the border with the state of New South Wales. New South Wales is north of Victoria, with the border being the westward-flowing Murray River. The Shire of Cobram was a local government area on the Murray River in the Goulburn Valley region, about north of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1953 until 1994. History The Shire of Cobram's origins lay in the North West Riding of the Shire of Tungamah, which was first incorporated on 15 May 1878. Cobram's development arose from irrigation projects developed in the 1930s; after World War II, returned servicemen were allocated irrigated holdings for fruit orchards and dairy farms, and Italian immigrants also took up land in the area.
