The Shire of Benalla was a local government area about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1868 until 1994. From 1948 onwards, Benalla itself was managed by a different entity, later known as the City of Benalla. History Benalla was first incorporated as a road district on 4 September 1868, and became a shire on 3 September 1869. The Hume is an economic rural region located in the north-eastern part of Victoria, Australia. Comprising an area in excess of with a population that ranges from (in 2011) to (in 2012), the Hume region includes the local government areas of Alpine Shire, Rural City of Benalla, City of Wodonga, City of Greater Shepparton, Shire of Indigo, Shire of Mansfield, Shire of Strathbogie, Shire of Towong and the Rural City of Wangaratta, and also includes five unincorporated areas encompassing the alpine ski resorts in the region. The Nillahcootie Dam, a rock and earth-fill embankment dam with a unique Gothic arch-shaped crest spillway across the Broken River that is located near , in the Alpine region of Victoria, Australia. Lake Mokoan
Lake Mokoan was an artificial lake in northern Victoria, Australia, roughly 7 km north-east of Benalla. It was created by diverting water from the Broken River and Hollands Creek into Winton and Green swamps. Construction began in the late 1960s and was completed in 1971. Hundreds of thousands of trees within the swamp soon died across the lake and surrounding plains, killed by the flooding of the former swampland. The large, shallow lake had a very high surface area to volume ratio, resulting in extreme water loss through evaporation, and there were frequent toxic algal blooms requiring regular closures for recreation activities and causing livestock to become ill. Although a locally popular watersports destination, the Victorian government decided to decommission the canals and lake to restore the landscape to a more natural wetland and woodland ecosystem. Goorambat is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Rural City of Benalla local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Goorambat and the surrounding area had a population of 297. History The Post Office opened on 17 March 1879 and the office named Goorambat Railway Station opened in 1883. Devenish, Victoria
Devenish is a town in northern Victoria, Australia within the Rural City of Benalla local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Devenish and the surrounding area had a population of 360, declining to 197 by 2016. History The Post Office opened on 9 June 1877 as Broken Creek and was renamed Devenish in 1878. In 1883 on the arrival of the railway, the office was moved and named Devenish Railway Station, reverting to Devenish in about 1889 as the township developed. An earlier office dating from 1870, Major Plains, was known as Devenish from 1874 until 1878. The Devenish concrete grain silos were built between the railway line and the main street and opened to receive wheat in December 1943. Later the Bulk Oat storage building was built in 1965. Baddaginnie is a town in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the North East railway line, in the Rural City of Benalla, 12 kilometres south-west of Benalla itself on the old Hume Highway. It is situated in mainly flat unforested country, one kilometre west of Baddaginnie Creek. At the , Baddaginnie and the surrounding area had a population of 308. Glenrowan is a town located in the Wangaratta local government area of Victoria, Australia. It is 236 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and 14 kilometres from Wangaratta and near the Warby Ranges and Mount Glenrowan. At the , Glenrowan had a population of 963. History Glenrowan was named after farmers James and George Rowan who ran farms in the area between 1846 and 1858.
