The Shire of Heywood was a local government area about west-southwest of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1856 until 1994. It was, for most of its life, known as the Shire of Portland. History Heywood was first incorporated as the Portland Road District on 25 January 1856, which became the Shire of Portland on 8 December 1863. On 23 April 1958 and 31 May 1968, it lost parts of its area to the Town of Portland, and on 1 October 1988, it was renamed the Shire of Heywood. The Barwon South West region stretches from the tip of the Queenscliff Heads to the border of South Australia. Dartmoor is a rural township on the Princes Highway and the Glenelg River between Heywood and the South Australian border, in southwestern Victoria. Allestree is a small town in Victoria, Australia. It is located along the Princes Highway, north-east of Portland. At the 2016 Census, Allestree and the surrounding area recorded a population of 128. Allestree is named after Allestree in Derbyshire, England. Allestree Post Office opened on 9 August 1907 (replacing nearby Bolwarra) and closed in 1971. Within the locality of Allestree is the Convincing Ground where a massacre of aborigines is alleged to have taken place in around 1833. The Shire of Glenelg is a local government area in the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia, located in the south-western part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 19,665. It includes the towns of Casterton, Heywood, Merino and Portland. Although a shire of the same name existed before the amalgamations of the mid-1990s, the current Shire was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the former Shire of Glenelg with the Shire of Heywood and City of Portland.
