Shire Of Kowree
The Shire of Kowree was a local government area in western Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1862 until 1995. History Kowree was first incorporated as a road district on 24 June 1862, and became a shire on 26 January 1872. It annexed the South Riding of the Shire of Lowan on 29 May 1894, which was added to its North Riding. Accessed at State Library of Victoria, La Trobe Reading Room. On 20 January 1995, the Shire of Kowree was abolished, and along with the Shire of Kaniva and parts of the Shires of Arapiles and Glenelg, was merged into the newly created Shire of West Wimmera. The Black Range and Toolondo Reservoir districts were transferred to the newly created Rural City of Horsham, while a small unpopulated section was transferred to the Shire of Southern Grampians, created earlier in September 1994. Wimmera
The Wimmera is a region of the Australian state of Victoria. The district is located within parts of the Loddon Mallee and the Grampians regions; and covers the dryland farming area south of the range of Mallee scrub, east of the South Australia border and north of the Great Dividing Range. It can also be defined as the land within the social catchment of Horsham, its main settlement. Most of the Wimmera is very flat, with only the Grampians and Mount Arapiles rising above vast plains and the low plateaux that form the Great Divide in this part of Victoria. The Grampians are very rugged and tilted, with many sheer sandstone cliffs on their eastern sides, but gentle slopes on the west. In the context of the Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia, the Wimmera is a sub-region of located within the Murray Darling Depression bioregion. Road Districts Of Victoria (Australia)
Road districts were established in the colony of Victoria, Australia, pursuant to legislation passed in 1853 and were an early form of local government in Victoria. The districts were outside towns, which were instead incorporated either as municipalities or boroughs. The road districts were created between 1853 and 1871. Road districts were established after public meetings to discuss boundaries etc. followed by a petition to the governor. Upon the proclamation of a district a public meeting was held to elect officers of the Road Board, which was responsible for the building and maintenance of local roads and bridges and raised finance from rates levied on landowners. Minimay, Victoria
Minimay is a small town located in Victoria, Australia. The town is in the Shire of West Wimmera from the South Australian border, about halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide. At the 2016 census, Minimay and the surrounding area recorded a population of 84. A signpost outside the town lists the town's population at 9. Geography Farming is the main industry in Minimay and includes sheep and cattle breeding and arable crops. Center pivot irrigation is used to water crops and give satellite images of the area a characteristic patchwork pattern of green circles. Before agriculture, the area was quite wooded; at the time trees were cleared, agriculture in Australia was not advanced and initial attempts to grow crops required much manual labour, and the town consequently had a higher population. Harrow, Victoria
Harrow is a town in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of West Wimmera local government area, 391 kilometres north west of the state capital Melbourne, overlooking the Glenelg River valley. At the 2016 census, Harrow and the surrounding area had a population of 200. The first European explorer of the area was Thomas Mitchell and a monument marks the spot where he crossed the Glenelg River. The region that included the later Harrow townsite was first taken up as a sheep station by William Rickets in August 1840. A store was built on the site of Harrow in March 1848 by R. H. Evans near the pre-existing Foresters Inn. There is no record that the Forester's Inn was ever licensed. A Post Office was announced on 16 March 1849 to be operated out of Mr R. H. Evans store. Gymbowen, Victoria
Gymbowen is a locality in the Shire of West Wimmera of Victoria, Australia. Gymbowen recorded a population of 52 at the . History The date and establishment of Gymbowen is unknown, however the local school was opened in 1891 and the local hotel possibly earlier. The Post office was opened in 1882 and the 1891-92 post office directory lists the following residents: Gymbowen served as a coach changing stage and as the railway reached there by 1894 until it closed in 1986. The Gymbowen hotel was a widely patronized place of refreshment, and it is said that many stories should have been preserved for posterity. Gymbowen was the second post office in the district and the oldest survivor having opened on 1 June 1882 under the management of Mr. J. Houston. The annual postal allowance was 6 pounds ( A$13.9). Goroke ( ) is a town in the Wimmera region of Victoria. The town is located in the Shire of West Wimmera local government area, north west of the state capital, Melbourne. At the 2016 census, Goroke recorded a population of 299. History Named after the Aboriginal term for the Australian magpie, the town was established in 1882 as a supply centre for local selectors and by 1884 had a population of 50. Goroke Post Office opened on 1 July 1884. Three years later, facilities in Goroke included a flour mill, two stores, a school, a mechanics' hall, a hotel and a blacksmith's. Originally connected to Kaniva and Nhill by a track through the Little Desert, in 1894, the railway reached Goroke from Natimuk until it closed in 1986.
