The Shire of Coorow is a local government area located in the Mid West region of Western Australia, about north of Perth, the state capital, and about south of the city of Geraldton. The Shire covers an area of and its seat of government is the town of Coorow, with the largest settlement being Leeman. History Historically, the area was part of the Carnamah Road District. Leeman, Western Australia
Leeman is a small coastal town in the Shire of Coorow in Western Australia. Land was first surveyed and sub-divided in 1961 and the townsite was gazetted in 1961 as Snag Island, a name that is still in common use. Snag Island is a rocky island a small distance off-shore from the town. The town was named after Abraham Leeman van Santwits, a Dutch sailor. He was second officer on the Dutch East India Company ship ' (''Gilt Dragon'') which was wrecked in April 1656 just south of Ledge Point, north of what is now Perth. Leeman was sent with a party of seven by captain Pieter Albertszoon to Batavia (now Jakarta) for help; they arrived there in June 1656. In 1658 Leeman returned as first officer on board ''Waeckende Boei'' in search of the wreckage. He was in charge of the shore party that was abandoned when a storm blew in. The State Register of Heritage Places is the heritage register of historic sites in Western Australia deemed significant at the state level by the Heritage Council of Western Australia. History In the 1970s, following its establishment of the National Trust of Western Australia, the National Trust created a set of classified properties, and following legislation requiring inventories, Local Government authorities in Western Australia produced a subsequent set of Municipal Inventories, which then resulted in items then being included in the state register. Marchagee, Western Australia
Marchagee is a small townsite located 243 km north of Perth in the Mid West region of Western Australia. A reserve for travellers was kept aside in the area in 1876, and the name recorded by the surveyor was Marchagee Well. The name is Aboriginal but its meaning is unknown. In 1899 the Midland Railway Company established a station at Marchagee. Some large lots were surveyed for agricultural purposes in 1906, and the townsite was gazetted in 1927. Gunyidi is a small town in the Shire of Coorow. The town is situated between Moora and Carnamah in the Mid West region of Western Australia. The town was originally a siding along the Midlands Railway and was initially known as Siberia Fettlers Camp, which was established in 1906. The name was soon changed to Gunnyidi.
