Shipbuilding (album)
''Shipbuilding'' is a mini album by Tasmin Archer, released in 1994. Archer decided to follow up her successful 1992 debut '' Great Expectations'' with an EP of four covers of songs written by Elvis Costello, which was released in January 1994 in the singer's homeland of the UK. The title track peaked at No. 40. Costello admired the covers. SBK Records, Archer's label in North America, decided to release the EP as a full album instead, and to fill the space they included four tracks from Archer's debut album in live form. Critical reception ''The Guardian'' wrote: "'Shipbuilding' and 'New Amsterdam', two of this overrated songwriter's most boring compositions, blossom under Archer's caressing voice and the piano softly tinkling in the background." ''The Boston Globe'' determined that "the melodic, piano-based 'When It Comes Right Down to It' is the standout." Shipbuilding (song)
"Shipbuilding" is a song with lyrics by Elvis Costello and music by Clive Langer. Written during the Falklands War of 1982, Costello's lyrics highlight the irony of the war bringing back prosperity to the traditional shipbuilding areas of Clydeside , Merseyside (Cammell Laird), North East England and Belfast (Harland and Wolff) to build new ships to replace those being sunk in the war, whilst also sending off the sons of these areas to fight and, potentially, lose their lives in those same ships. According to Robert Sandall, the best version of the song is the one recorded and released as a single by English singer-songwriter Robert Wyatt in August 1982 a few months after the Falklands War, although it was not a hit until it was re-released eight months later on the first anniversary of the conflict. Charlie Morgan (musician)
John Charles Morgan (born 9 August 1955) is an English musician, singer and songwriter. Early years Charlie Morgan was born in Hammersmith, London. He became professional in 1973 Music career By the mid-1980s, Charlie Morgan had become one of the top session drummers in the UK. In the 1980s he played on albums by artists including Elton John, Gary Moore, Justin Hayward, Kate Bush, Roy Harper, Pete Townshend, Judie Tzuke, Clannad, Tracey Ullman and Nik Kershaw. He was also the drummer in Gary Moore & Phil Lynott's video "Out in the Fields". In 1985 his drumming work with Nik Kershaw attracted the attention of Elton John, who booked him to play on his ''Ice on Fire'' album. Later that year John invited him to play with his band at Live Aid. This was the start of a thirteen-year period of recording and touring with John. Alan Clark (born 5 March 1952) is an English musician who was the first keyboardist and co-producer of the rock band Dire Straits. In 2018, Clark was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a significant member of Dire Straits. Early years As a six-year-old child, Alan received piano lessons. From the age of nine years he taught himself. John Beck is a British songwriter, producer, keyboard player and guitarist known for his work with Tasmin Archer and Corinne Bailey Rae. Writing and recording Archer describes the song as "it's about the modern breed of politicians and it was written in the very early 1990s even before things became has bad as they are now." Four instruments were used in the recording of "Lords of the New Church", John Hughes, Elliott Randall and Robbie McIntosh provided the guitars in the song whereas John Beck and Paul Wickens played keyboards. "New Amsterdam" is a song written and performed by new wave musician Elvis Costello on his 1980 album, '' Get Happy!!'' Written about the New World and New York, the recording of the song that appears on ''Get Happy!!'' was a demo that Costello had recorded in Pimlico. The song was released as an EP single, reaching number 36 in the United Kingdom. The song has since been lauded by critics and included on compilation albums. Background "New Amsterdam" began as one of many demos produced by Costello after '' Armed Forces''. Clive Langer
Clive Langer (born 19 June 1954 in Hampstead, London, England) is an English record producer and songwriter, active from the mid-1970s onwards. He usually works with Alan Winstanley. He composed the music for the films ''Still Crazy'' and ''Brothers of the Head''. Prior to his record producing career he was a guitarist with the British cult band Deaf School. Langer sometimes performed under the alias of 'Cliff Hanger', and his production work was sometimes attributed to 'Clanger'. After Deaf School, in mid 1977, Langer joined Big in Japan which he suggested to his friend Bill Drummond (later founder of Zoo Records and member of The KLF) to form, but Langer quit shortly afterwards and began a new band, Clive Langer and the Boxes.
