Shin-Tson Wu
Shin-Tson Wu, () is an American physicist and inventor of Taiwanese origin. He is currently a Pegasus professor at CREOL, The College of Optics and Photonics, University of Central Florida. Wu's contributions to liquid-crystal research and the resulting patent portfolio for next-generation liquid crystal displays (LCDs), adaptive optics, laser-beam steering, biophotonics, and new photonic materials, have had a major impact on display technology worldwide. Biography Wu was born in Nantou, Taiwan. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, USA) and BS in physics from the National Taiwan University (Taipei). Prior to joining the University of Central Florida in 2001, he was with Hughes Research Laboratories (Malibu, California, USA) for 18 years. Nantou City
Nantou City (Mandarin Pīnyīn: ''Nántóu Shì''; Hokkien POJ: ''Lâm-tâu-chhī'') is a county-administered city located in the northwest of Nantou County, Taiwan. It lies between the Bagua Mountains and the Maoluo River and is the county seat of Nantou County. Freeway No. 3 serves Nantou City. Transflective Liquid-crystal Display
A transflective liquid-crystal display is a liquid-crystal display (LCD) with an optical layer that reflects and transmits light (''transflective'' is a portmanteau of ''transmissive'' and ''reflective''). Under bright illumination (e.g. when exposed to daylight) the display acts mainly as a reflective display with the contrast being constant with illuminance. However, under dim and dark ambient situations the light from a backlight is transmitted through the transflective layer to provide light for the display. The transflective layer is called a transflector. It is typically made from a sheet polymer. It is similar to a one-way mirror but is not specular. An application is digital LCD wristwatches.
