Simon is a common name, from Hebrew שִׁמְעוֹן '' Šimʻôn'', meaning "listen" or "hearing". It is also a classical Greek name, deriving from an adjective meaning "flat-nosed". In the first century AD, Simon was the most popular male name for Jews in Roman Judea. The Hebrew name is Hellenised as ''Symeon'' ( grc-gre, Συμεών) in the Septuagint, and in the New Testament as both Symeon in Strong's Concordance and, according to most authorities, Simon. Professor Shimon Shetreet ( he, שמעון שטרית, born 1 March 1946) is a former Israeli politician who held several ministerial portfolios between 1992 and 1996. He is currently the Greenblatt Chair of Public and International Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Early life Born in Erfoud in Morocco, Shetreet's family made aliyah to Israel in 1949 when he was three years old. He attended a religious elementary school, before studying at a yeshiva, winning the International Bible Contest at the age of 13. He went on to study law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, gaining an LLB in 1968 and LLM in 1970. Playing career Ben Shimon was born in Petah Tikva, Israel, to a Jewish family. Šimon (Old Norse: ''Sigmundr'') was a Varangian (Viking) whose story is related in the Kievan '' Patericon'' and his story concerns the creation of the Kievan cave monastery, where he is reported to have been its most important donor.
