Shim Soo-chang
Shim Soo-chang (born February 9, 1981, in Seoul, South Korea) is a South Korean relief pitcher for the Hanwha Eagles of the KBO League. He bats and throws right-handed. Amateur career Shim attended Baemyung High School in Seoul, South Korea. In , as the team's ace pitcher he led his team to runners-up in the President's Cup National Championship. During the competition, Shim drew attention from MLB scouts, and then negotiated a contract with a few Major League teams. However, he eventually failed in his attempt to secure the contract with any team. Upon graduation from the school in , he was selected by the LG Twins with the 11th pick in the 2nd round of the 2000 KBO Draft, but chose to play college baseball at Hanyang University instead of turning pro. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO; ko, 한국야구위원회) is the governing body for the professional leagues of baseball in South Korea. The KBO was founded in 1981 and has governed two leagues: the KBO League ( ko, KBO 리그) and KBO Futures League ( ( farm league) since 1982. Save (baseball)
In baseball, a save (abbreviated SV or S) is credited to a pitcher who finishes a game for the winning team under certain prescribed circumstances. Most commonly a pitcher earns a save by entering in the ninth inning of a game in which his team is winning by three or fewer runs and finishing the game by pitching one inning without losing the lead. The number of saves or percentage of save opportunities successfully converted are oft-cited statistics of relief pitchers, particularly those in the closer role. The save statistic was created by journalist Jerome Holtzman in 1959 to "measure the effectiveness of relief pitchers" and was adopted as an official Major League Baseball (MLB) statistic in 1969. Hold (baseball)
A hold (abbreviated HLD, H or HD) is awarded to a relief pitcher who meets the following three conditions: :1. Enters the game in a save situation; that is, when all of the following three conditions apply: :: (a) He appears in relief (i.e., is not the starting pitcher) when his team is leading; and :: (b) He is not the winning pitcher; and :: (c) He qualifies under one of the following conditions: ::: (i) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and maintains that lead for at least one inning ::: (ii) He enters the game with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck ::: (iii) He pitches for at least three innings; :2. Bullpen
In baseball, the bullpen (or simply the pen) is the area where relief pitchers warm up before entering a game. A team's roster of relief pitchers is also metonymically referred to as "the bullpen". These pitchers usually wait in the bullpen if they have not yet played in a game, rather than in the dugout with the rest of the team. The starting pitcher also makes their final pregame warm-up throws in the bullpen. Managers can call coaches in the bullpen on an in-house telephone from the dugout to tell a certain pitcher to begin their warm-up tosses. Each team generally has its own bullpen consisting of two pitching rubbers and plates at regulation distance from each other. In baseball, a middle reliever or middle relief pitcher, is a relief pitcher who typically pitches during the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings of a standard baseball game. In leagues with no designated hitter, such as in the National League prior to 2022 and the Japanese Central League, a middle reliever often comes in after the starting pitcher has been pulled in favor of a pinch hitter. In baseball, a setup man (or set-up man, also sometimes referred to as a setup pitcher or setup reliever) is a relief pitcher who regularly pitches before the closer. They commonly pitch the eighth inning, with the closer pitching the ninth. As closers were reduced to one-inning specialists, setup men became more prominent. Setup pitchers often come into the game with the team losing or the game tied. They are usually the second best relief pitcher on a team, behind the closer.
