Shim-Sutcliffe Architects
Shim-Sutcliffe Architects is a Canadian architectural design practice based in Toronto, Ontario. Practice Shim-Sutcliffe Architects was founded in 1994 by University of Toronto professor Brigitte Shim and her partner Howard Sutcliffe. The founders have been collaborating since the early 1980s. The studio's portfolio encompasses built work at all scales including the design and construction of buildings as well as furniture, lighting and landscapes. Shim-Sutcliffe works with public, private, and non-profit clients across Canada with projects in Hawaii and Russia. Brigitte Shim Brigitte Shim (born 1958, Kingston, Jamaica) emigrated to Canada in 1965. She received a degree in environmental studies in 1981 and architecture in 1983 from the University of Waterloo, Ontario. Integral House
Integral House is a private residence located at 194 Roxborough Drive in the Rosedale neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The project was commissioned by mathematician James Stewart as a residence incorporating a performance space, and was designed by Brigitte Shim and Howard Sutcliffe of the Toronto architectural firm Shim-Sutcliffe Architects. The name of the house is derived from the mathematical integral symbol, commonly used in calculus; Stewart's wealth derived from his authorship of widely used calculus textbooks. It has won several architectural awards, including a 2012 Governor-General's Medal in Architecture. Glenn D. Muskoka Boathouse
The Muskoka Boathouse was the first building commissioned of a twenty year long project on Point William located on the southwestern shore of Lake Muskoka in Muskoka, Ontario, Canada. The boathouse contains three areas; the interior area below with two boat slips, the living accommodation above totaling 64 m² (689 sq. ft) and the wooden dock on the lake. The building, which was completed in 1999, is one of the four buildings commissioned on the property. The others include the Cottage, Guest Cottage and the Garage. The Muskoka Boathouse, designed by architects Brigitte Shim and Howard Sutcliffe of Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, was commissioned by the clients for the purpose of creating a warm and inviting point of connection for the clients family and friends. Kitchener City Hall is the seat of municipal government of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. It has gone through many iterations through the 20th century, culminating in the current building, which opened in 1993. History The original location of the municipal seat was on the block bound by King, Frederick, Duke and Scott streets and home today to Market Square Shopping Centre; the first city hall was built in 1919 by William Henry Eugene Schmalz (son of Mayor W.H. KPMB is a Canadian architecture firm founded by Bruce Kuwabara, Thomas Payne, Marianne McKenna, and Shirley Blumberg, in 1987. It is headquartered in Toronto, where the majority of their work is found. Aside from designing buildings, the firm also works in interior design. KPMB Architects was officially renamed from Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects to KPMB Architects on February 12, 2013. Barton Myers (born November 6, 1934) is an American architect and president of Barton Myers Associates Inc. in Santa Barbara, California. With a career spanning more than 40 years, Myers is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and was a member of the Ontario Association of Architects while working in Canada earlier in his career. Early life Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Myers is a descendant of Moses Myers, a businessman who was the first permanent Jewish settler in Norfolk, Virginia. Ronald Thom
Ronald James Thom, (May 15, 1923 – October 29, 1986) was a Canadian architect. He is well known for two works: Massey College and Trent University's riverside campus. Early years He was born in Penticton, British Columbia, the son of James Thom and Elena Myrtle Fennel. Thom served as an aviator with the RCAF during World War II, returned and graduated from the Vancouver School of Art in 1947. He never went to architecture school but apprenticed at Thompson, Berwick & Pratt, where he quickly became recognized as an unusually gifted draughtsman and designer. and also designed notable houses in the Vancouver area, several of which won Massey Awards, the country's top award for architecture.
