Shilp Guru
The Shilp Guru is the highest honour in the Indian handicrafts sector awarded by Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. It is conferred annually upon 10 master craftspersons who have created an exceptional piece of craft work, showcased highest level of quality & skill in the traditional Indian handicrafts and passed on their skills to the next generation of artisans. The awards were first introduced in 2002 where 10 eminent master craftpersons were honoured with ''Shilp Guru'' (master artisan) title by the President of India. It is presented along with Sant Kabir Awards and National Handicrafts Award to master craftspersons and master weavers, introduced in 1965. Indian Rupee
The Indian rupee ( symbol: ₹; code: INR) is the official currency in the republic of India. The rupee is subdivided into 100 ''paise'' (singular: ''paisa''), though as of 2022, coins of denomination of 1 rupee are the lowest value in use whereas 2000 rupees is the highest. The issuance of the currency is controlled by the Reserve Bank of India. Lalita Vakil
Lalita Vakil is an Indian embroidery artist known for her contributions to the preservation and promotion of Chamba Rumal, a traditional form of handkerchief embroidery from Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh. Vakil has been awarded Padma Shri in 2022 by the Government of India for her contributions in the field of arts. She was also awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2018. Life Vakil was married at the age of fifteen. It was her father-in-law who recognized her talent in creating designs for Chamba Rumal. He motivated her further to train local girls and women in this craft. Career Since the past fifty years, Vakil has been working for the promotion and preservation of Chamba Rumal. Bagh Print
Bagh print is a traditional Indian handicraft originating in Bagh, Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, India. The process is characterised by hand printed wood block relief prints with naturally sourced pigments and dyes. Bagh print motifs are typically geometric, paisley, or floral compositions design, dyed with vegetable colours of red and black over a white background, and is a popular textile printing product. Its name is derived from the village Bagh located on the banks of the Bagh River. History The origins of the Bagh print are uncertain, but it is believed that the practice is over 1,000 years old, with the techniques having been handed down through family practice from generation to generation. Ismail Sulemanji Khatri
Ismail Sulemanji Khatri (12 August 1937 – 28 April 2014) was an Indian craftsman, especially known for his invention of the Bagh print, a part of the centuries-old hand block printing practice. He started block printing having moved to Bagh in the 1950s. As well as using traditional blocks, some 200–300 years old, he had new blocks made with designs inspired by the jali patterns found locally and at the Taj Mahal. He improved upon the red and black dyes previously used, and developed new vegetable-based dyes. Success came particularly when he started printing on bed sheets, saris and fabrics. Kailash Chandra Meher
Kailash Chandra Meher (born 22 January 1954) is an Indian artist, inventor, and social activist. He is a painter of contemporary modern art paintings and traditional Tussar Pattachitra paintings of Odisha. He was a recipient of the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2013. Personal life and education Meher was born in an artist family in Sonepur town of Odisha state. He studied at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan and received a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Visva-Bharati University, Shantiniketan in West Bengal. He was trained in the art of Pattachitra painting initially by his father and subsequently under guidance of Bhagwat Maharana. His wife Smt. Brahmdeo Ram Pandit
Brahmdeo Ram Pandit is an Indian studio potter and craftsman, known for his expertise in making pottery. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of art. Biography Brahmdeo Ram Pandit was born in kumbhar family with meagre financial resources, on 2 March 1949, in the Nawada district, in the Indian state of Bihar, to Ram Pandit, a pottery maker who had learned histrade from his father, Murthi Pandit. He learned the basic craft of pottery making from his father and joined Sekho Devra Ashram in Kawakole, Nawada for formal training in pottery making which he completed in 1969.
