Shihad
Shihad are a rock band formed in Wellington, New Zealand in 1988. The band consists of founders Tom Larkin (drums, backing vocals, samplers), Phil Knight (lead guitar, synthesiser, backing vocals) and Jon Toogood (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), who were joined by Karl Kippenberger (bass guitar, backing vocals) in 1991. The band were known as Pacifier between 2002 and 2004. FVEY (album)
''FVEY'' (pronounced ''Five Eyes'') is the ninth studio album by New Zealand alternative rock band Shihad, released on 8 August 2014. The album debuted at number one on the New Zealand albums chart, making it Shihad's fifth New Zealand number one album. The chart position also makes Shihad the only New Zealand band to have five number one albums, tying them with solo artist Hayley Westenra who also has five number one albums. The album name is a reference to "Five Eyes", often abbreviated as FVEY, an intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Background For the production of their ninth studio album, Shihad worked with Jaz Coleman, of English post-punk band Killing Joke. ''Ignite'' is the eighth studio album by Shihad and was released on 20 September 2010 in New Zealand and 24 September 2010 in Australia. ''Ignite'' debuted at number one on the New Zealand Music Chart, eventually achieving gold sales there. Lead single "Sleepeater" is featured in Konami's '' Pro Evolution Soccer 2011'' video game. Critical reception Scott Kara from ''The New Zealand Herald'' gave ''Ignite'' four out of five stars, praising Shihad's heavy and potent music. Jon Toogood
Jonathan Charles Toogood (born in Wellington, New Zealand, on 9 August 1971) is the frontman (lead vocals and guitar) of the New Zealand rock band Shihad. He formed the band in 1988 with fellow Wellingtonian Tom Larkin. Toogood and Larkin met as teenage fans of AC/DC and Metallica. Solo work In 2009 Toogood revealed he had been travelling around New Zealand to collaborate with other New Zealand artists for a project that is "extra-curricular" to Shihad's music. Confirmed collaborators included Tiki Taane, Ruban and Kody Neilson from the Mint Chicks, Julia Deans from Fur Patrol, Anika Moa, Shayne Carter of Dimmer/Straitjacket Fits fame and Ladi 6. "The Adults" was released as a full-length album in New Zealand in June 2011. Toogood subsequently toured NZ and Australia under this banner, joined onstage by Deans and Carter. ''Old Gods'' is the tenth studio album by New Zealand alternative rock band Shihad, released on 8 October 2021. The album debuted at number one in New Zealand. Production Much of the album was inspired by Jon Toogood's experiences after his conversion to Islam, before his marriage to Dana Salih in Sudan in 2014, and the band's disgust at the rise of Conservative politicians in the world. The song "Little Demons" was one of the first songs written for the album, inspired by a televised Australian political debate where a Liberal Party of Australia told an Aboriginal Australian woman to call the police when she experiences racist threats. ''The General Electric'' is the fourth studio album by New Zealand band Shihad, released in October 1999. It peaked at No. 1 on the New Zealand albums chart and was certified triple platinum (under New Zealand). and on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart it peaked at No. 23. Tom Larkin (musician)
Tom Larkin (born 18 September 1971) is a founding member of the New Zealand band Shihad, band manager, and music producer. He grew up in Wellington, New Zealand but now lives in Melbourne in Australia. He is often mentioned as one of the greatest hard rock drummers that New Zealand has ever produced. Early life and family Larkin was born in Wellington, New Zealand to parents Thomas Cedric Larkin and Sarah Marianne Williams. As a kid, he often played the drums so loud in his parents big Kelburn house in Wellington, that the neighbours sometimes complained. While at school at Wellington High in the late 1980s he met Jon Toogood and together they former Shihad back in 1988. The first gig was at the Clarendon Tavern in Courtenay Place which was the first of thousands of live gigs performed by the band over many years. ''Beautiful Machine'' is the seventh studio album by Shihad and was released on 21 April 2008 in New Zealand and 17 May 2008 in Australia. The album is much softer than previous Shihad releases, including many electronica elements and '80s backing rhythms - to the point where lead singer Jon Toogood has called some tracks "dance songs". The lead single "One Will Hear the Other" was released early January 2008, where it peaked as the second most played Kiwi song. "Vampires" was the album's second single and surpassed "One Will Hear the Other" in airplay, peaking as the number one most played Kiwi song shortly after its release. ''Pacifier'' is the fifth studio album released by New Zealand band, Shihad. At the time of the release they were performing under the name ''Pacifier'' due to potential controversy surrounding the similarity of the word Shihad to jihad. The name ''Pacifier'' was derived from the single of the same name from their previous album, ''The General Electric''. Released in 2002, songs such as "Run" and "Bullitproof" went on to become hit singles. "Bullitproof" peaked at #27 on the ''Billboard'' Mainstream Rock Tracks, and #37 on the ''Billboard'' Modern Rock Tracks. However, it still failed to break the band into the United States. "Everything" was used in the closing credits of the 2002 film '' Swimfan''. Karl Kippenberger
Karl Brenton Jamie Kippenberger (born 26 August 1973 in Wellington, New Zealand), grandson of Captain E.T Kippenberger, great nephew of Major-General Sir Howard Kippenberger, is the bass guitarist of the New Zealand band Shihad. Kippenberger grew up in Pukerua Bay just north of Wellington and attended Kapiti College (formerly Raumati District High School). Kapiti College is also the same high school that produced film director Peter Jackson, former All Black Christian Cullen as well as several other well-known Kiwi musicians, including Ara Adams Tamata of Katchafire and Danny Rodda. After his 6th Form (year 12) year he left to attend Aotea College for his final high school year. Head Like A Hole (band)
Head Like a Hole (often shortened to HLAH to avoid copyright issues) is a rock band from Wellington, New Zealand. The group is named after the Nine Inch Nails song Head Like a Hole, of the same name. History HLAH formed in Wellington, originally comprising Nigel Regan, Mark "Hiddee Beast" Hamill, Nigel "Booga" Beazley and Andrew Durno. Previous to HLAH forming Regan and Hamill played in a covers band playing songs by artists such as early Masters of Reality, Black Sabbath, Faith No More, Nirvana (band), Nirvana, Butthole Surfers, Mudhoney and Fugazi. The Adults
The Adults is a "collaborative name" used for two different recording projects led by New Zealand musician and Shihad frontman Jon Toogood. The first iteration of the Adults was a New Zealand rock supergroup that released a self-titled album in 2011. In 2018 a completely different set of musicians (other than Toogood) performed on Haja, an album that blended Aghani Al-Banat (a Sudanese style that translates to "girls' music" and is performed at weddings) with New Zealand hip hop.
