Shibetoro District, Hokkaidō
In Japanese, refers to a region disputed between Russia and Japan, currently under Russian administration. Under Japanese classification, it belongs to Nemuro Subprefecture, Hokkaidō, Japan. Cape Kamuiwakka (Russian: Cape Koritskiy) is the northernmost point under Japanese claim. History It was established in 1869 as part of Chishima Province when 11 provinces and 86 districts were established in Hokkaidō. The district initially consisted of Shibetoro (蘂取村) and Otoimaushi (乙今牛村) villages. In 1923, the two villages merged to become just Shibetoro (Rudnaya) village. In August 1945, it was invaded by the Soviet army. The region remains under control of the Russian Federation. Nemuro Subprefecture
is a subprefecture of Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. Japan claims the southern parts of the disputed Kuril Islands (known as the Northern Territories in Japan) as part of this subprefecture. As of March 2009, the subprefecture has an estimated population of 84,035, and an area of 3406.23 km². Hokkaidō
is Japan's second largest island and comprises the largest and northernmost prefecture, making up its own region. The Tsugaru Strait separates Hokkaidō from Honshu; the two islands are connected by the undersea railway Seikan Tunnel. Cape Koritsky (russian: Мыс Корицкий, ''Mys Koritsky'') is the northernmost point of Iturup, one of the Kuril Islands. In Japanese, the cape is called either or . The Southern Kuril Islands, including Iturup, are currently administrated by Russia. However, Japan also claims these islands. Since the cape is the northernmost point of the Southern Kuriles, it is also the northernmost point under Japanese claim. Chishima Province
was a province of Japan created during the Meiji Era. It originally contained the Kuril Islands from Kunashiri northwards, and later incorporated Shikotan as well. Its original territory is currently occupied by Russia, and its territory was renounced in the San Francisco Treaty except for the southern Kuril islands (see Kuril Islands dispute). Kuril Islands Dispute
The Kuril Islands dispute, known as the Northern Territories dispute in Japan, is a territorial dispute between Japan and Russia over the ownership of the four southernmost Kuril Islands. The Kuril Islands are a chain of islands that stretch between the Japanese island of Hokkaido at their southern end and the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula at their northern end. The islands separate the Sea of Okhotsk from the Pacific Ocean. The extreme points of Japan include the coordinates that are farthest north, south, east and west in Japan, and the ones that are at the highest and the lowest elevations in the country.
