Shetland's Young Heritage
Heritage Fiddlers (or Shetland's Heritage Fiddlers) is a group of Shetland fiddle players, originally formed in 1981 under the guidance of the late Dr Tom Anderson MBE, who put the group together from the young pupils that he tutored. The group was originally called Tammy's Peerie Angels, then Shetland's Young Heritage. The group is now called Heritage Fiddlers as the members felt they "couldna git awa wi da young bit onymare so wir noo kent as Shetland's Heritage Fiddlers." Shetland
Shetland, also called the Shetland Islands and formerly Zetland, is a subarctic archipelago in Scotland lying between Orkney, the Faroe Islands and Norway. It is the northernmost region of the United Kingdom. The islands lie about to the northeast of Orkney, from mainland Scotland and west of Norway. They form part of the border between the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the North Sea to the east. Their total area is ,Shetland Islands Council (2012) p. 4 and the population totalled 22,920 in 2019. Tom Anderson (fiddler)
Tom (Tammy) Anderson MBE (1910–1991) was a Scottish fiddler, teacher, composer and collector of traditional tunes. He has been described as "...the most prominent personality in the entire history of Shetland fiddling." Early life Born on 29 August 1910 on the "Moorfield" croft at Eshaness, Shetland Islands, Scotland. Anderson was the oldest child of James Anderson (born 26 September 1879, Hamnavoe, Eshaness) and his wife Harriet Margaret Johnson (born 24 April 1882, Avensgarth, Eshaness). Brought up in a musical home, he learnt to play the fiddle from his grandfather; as a teenager he played in local bands for weddings and dances in the Northmavine area. Adulthood On leaving school he had various jobs in the area: fishing, helping to build Eshaness Lighthouse, labouring on a whaling station. Catriona MacDonald
Catriona Macdonald is a musician and teacher from Shetland and is considered to be one of the world's leading traditional fiddle players. Background Macdonald started studying fiddle with Dr Tom Anderson MBE in 1981 at age 11 (she considers herself to be a late starter), was a founding member of Shetland's Young Heritage and won the Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year competition in 1983. In 1992 Macdonald won the BBC Radio Two Young Tradition Award and went on to study voice for four years at the Royal College of Music in London. She lives in Scotland and focuses both on an her international music playing and an academic career . Macdonald is an active teacher with a passion for sharing her knowledge of traditional fiddle techniques and vernacular.
