Sheryl McFarlane
Sheryl McFarlane is a Canadian author of fourteen books for children and young adults. Career Sheryl was born in the Ottawa Valley, grew up in Arizona and has lived on the West Coast of Canada since 1974. A former teacher, Sheryl often visits schools and speaks at seminars across Canada on topics related to children's literature. A graduate of the University of British Columbia, Sheryl received her B.Ed. in Science and Canadian Studies Among her best selling children's books are ''Waiting for the Whales'', ''A Pod of Orcas'', ''Jessie's Island'', ''This is the Dog'' and ''Eagle Dreams''. Her first young adult novel, ''The Smell of Paint'', won Moonbeam Awardgold medal in the Young Adult category and was selected by thCanadian Children's Book Centeras a 2007 best book of the year. Canadians (french: Canadiens) are people identified with the country of Canada. This connection may be residential, legal, historical or cultural. Canadian Toy Testing Council
The Canadian Toy Testing Council was a volunteer-operated not-for-profit organization established in 1952 to test toys for playability and safety. The organization ceased operations in June 2015. History Each year, the organization solicited families from the Ottawa–Gatineau region to volunteer for its testing program, which reviewed hundreds of games and toys made available to the Canadian market that year, as well as books authored by Canadian writers. Parents of participating families were required to pay a membership fee and attend a training session. There was often a waiting list of families that wanted to participate in the toy testing program. Children, infants to 16 years of age, from about 300 families would play with up to 25 games for 6 to 12 weeks, providing feedback to the organization on the game's assembly, design, durability, function, play value, and safety. Governor General's Awards
The Governor General's Awards are a collection of annual awards presented by the Governor General of Canada, recognizing distinction in numerous academic, artistic, and social fields. The first award was conceived and inaugurated in 1937 by the Lord Tweedsmuir, a prolific writer of fiction and non-fiction; he created the Governor General's Literary Award with two award categories. Successive governors general have followed suit, establishing an award for whichever endeavour they personally found important. Fitzhenry & Whiteside is a Canadian book publishing and distribution company, located in Leaside, Ontario. It publishes trade titles in children's and young adult fiction, textbooks, reference, history, biography, photography, sports and poetry. The company was founded in 1966 by two former employees of other publishing houses: Robert I. Fitzhenry and Cecil L. Whiteside. It began as a distributor in Canada for American publishers such as Harper & Row, then started publishing reference works and nonfiction. Their lineup still includes such titles as ''The Fitzhenry and Whiteside Book of Canadian Facts and Dates.''
