Sherrill's Inn
Sherrill's Inn is a historic home located near Fairview, Buncombe County, North Carolina. It is a four bay by two bay, log house of the saddle-bag variety which has been raised to two stories and weatherboarded. Attached to it is an originally separate two-story, log building, two bays wide and two bays deep. Also on the property are a contributing stone spring house and log meathouse. The building was built about 1845, and used as an inn throughout much of the 19th century. Fairview is a census-designated place (CDP) in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,678 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The William Nelson Camp Jr. House, John A. Lanning House, Dr. Cireo McAfee McCracken House, and Sherrill's Inn are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Martin Gash bought 76 acres on Cripple Creek (later Gash's Creek) on November 27, 1793. Marshes which attracted buffalo had to be drained in order to use the land. Geography Fairview is located in southeastern Buncombe County along U.S. Route 74A (Charlotte Highway). It is southeast of downtown Asheville and northwest of Lake Lure. History In December, 1792 and April 1793, John Dillard was a Commissioner in a local political dispute of determining where the county seat of Buncombe County should be located. It was provided in an act creating Buncombe County that a committee of five persons be appointed for the selection of the site. Spring House
A spring house, or springhouse, is a small building, usually of a single room, constructed over a spring. While the original purpose of a springhouse was to keep the spring water clean by excluding fallen leaves, animals, etc., the enclosing structure was also used for refrigeration before the advent of ice delivery and, later, electric refrigeration. The water of the spring maintains a constant cool temperature inside the spring house throughout the year. Food that would otherwise spoil, such as meat, fruit, or dairy products, could be kept there, safe from animal depredations as well. Springhouses thus often also served as pumphouses, milkhouses, and root cellars.
