Sherose Island, Nova Scotia
Sherose Island is a small island and community of the same name located off the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada, within the Barrington municipal district of Shelburne County. The island is located in Barrington Passage, a small strait in Shelburne County and measures approximately 2 km long and 0.5 km wide. It is connected to mainland Nova Scotia by a short causeway. History The island was home to Acadian families until the expulsion of April 1756. From the 1960s to the late 1980s it was home to families of Royal Canadian Air Force and later Canadian Forces personnel stationed at CFS Barrington, a Pinetree Line early warning radar station located 27 km away at Baccaro. Families of service personnel were housed in 60 ft by 12 ft mobile trailers, except for the base Commanding Officer, who had a larger house at the end of the causeway. Cape Sable Island
Cape Sable Island, locally referred to as Cape Island, is a small Canadian island at the southernmost point of the Nova Scotia peninsula. It is sometimes confused with Sable Island. Historically, the Argyle, Nova Scotia region was known as Cape Sable and encompassed a much larger area than simply the island it does today. It extended from Cape Negro (Baccaro) through Chebogue. The island is situated in Shelburne County south of Barrington Head, separated from the mainland by the narrow strait of Barrington Passage, but has been connected since 1949 by a causeway. The Pinetree Line was a series of radar stations located across the northern United States and southern Canada at about the 50th parallel north, along with a number of other stations located on the Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Run by North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) (after its creation), over half were staffed by United States Air Force personnel with the balance operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force. CFS Barrington
Canadian Forces Station Barrington, also referred to as CFS Barrington, was a Canadian Forces Station located in the unincorporated community of Baccaro, Nova Scotia at Baccaro Point near the southwesternmost point of the province. History In 1943 the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) established a LORAN site at Baccaro Point to assist in navigation for Allied naval operations on the North Atlantic. In a CBC interview in June 2019, 93-year-old Mary Owen, who served in the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service, or "WRENS", recounted serving at Baccaro in 1944–45. She said 24 WRENS were assigned to the station when she was there. The station's personnel were given Bren guns, Sten guns, rifles, and explosives. The guns were to defend against any German landing parties, and the explosives were to destroy the secret LORAN equipment so that it would not fall into enemy hands.
