Sherman is a village in the town of Sherman, Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The village lies in the northern part of the town at intersections of County Routes 15 and 18, NY-76 and NY-430. The population was 681 at the 2020 census. History The village of Sherman was incorporated in 1890. Sherman was named for Roger Sherman, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The first settler was Dearing Dorman. A granite monument exists at the site of his original settlement on what is now known as Titus Road. Hector J. Peabody, simply referred to as Mr. Peabody, is an anthropomorphic cartoon dog who appeared in the late 1950s and early 1960s television animated series '' The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends'', produced by Jay Ward. Sherman Avenue is a collector road in the lower portion of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It begins at the Niagara Escarpment (the mountain) just south of Cumberland Avenue and is a one-way street bisecting the industrialized northern neighbourhoods of the city. It ends at Ship Street — the site of Steel Company of Canada (Stelco). The Sherman Access is the only mountain access with time restrictions. The pass opens every Monday to Friday during rush hour. The northbound is open to traffic for the morning rush; while the southbound is open to traffic during the afternoon rush. The rest of the time, it operates as a regular two-lane road. Fort Sherman is a former United States Army base in Panama, located on Toro Point at the Caribbean (northern) end of the Panama Canal, on the western bank of the Canal directly opposite Colón, Panama, Colón (which is on the eastern bank). It was the primary defensive base for the Caribbean sector of the Canal, and was also the center for US jungle warfare training for some time. Its Pacific-side partner was Fort Amador. Both bases were turned over to Panama in 1999. Sherman Island is an ice-covered island of Antarctica about long and wide, lying south of Thurston Island in the middle of Peacock Sound. The feature rises above the Abbot Ice Shelf which occupies the sound. Sherman is a ghost town in Albany County, Wyoming, United States. Sherman is southeast of Laramie in the Laramie Mountains and is named for Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman, purportedly at his request. From the 1860s to 1918, the town sat at the summit of the original grade of the first transcontinental railroad along the rails of the Union Pacific Railroad, at an elevation of . The town was abandoned after the Union Pacific moved its tracks to the south, where they crest a rise called Sherman Summit or Sherman Hill Summit about south-southeast of the former town. Before being named Sherman, Union Pacific construction crews had called the area Lone Tree Pass and Evans Pass. The original name honored James A. Evans, who surveyed the area searching for a shorter route through Wyoming than the earlier trails which crossed at South Pass.
