Sleeper are an English rock band formed in London in 1992. The group had eight UK Top 40 hit singles and three UK Top 10 albums during the 1990s. Their music was also featured in the soundtrack of the pop cultural hit movie '' Trainspotting''. The band split up in 1998, but reunited in 2017. ''Pleased to Meet You'' is the third studio album by English Britpop band Sleeper. The album was released on 13 October 1997 in the UK, peaking at #7 on the UK Album Chart. Two singles were released from this album, "She's a Good Girl", which reached #28, and "Romeo Me", which scraped in at #39 on the UK Top 40 singles chart. Remixes of "Motorway Man" by producer Steve Osbourne were released on 12" vinyl. In a review for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine stated that ''Pleased to Meet You'' "demonstrates that ouiseWener's songwriting has strengthened, as her melodies have more weight and her lyrics have more depth," and gave the record a three-star review. Britpop
Britpop was a mid-1990s British-based music culture movement that emphasised Britishness. It produced brighter, catchier alternative rock, partly in reaction to the popularity of the darker lyrical themes of the US-led grunge music and to the UK's own shoegaze music scene. The movement brought British alternative rock into the mainstream and formed the backbone of a larger British popular cultural movement, Cool Britannia, which evoked the Swinging Sixties and the British guitar pop of that decade. Britpop was a media-driven focus on bands which emerged from the independent music scene of the early 1990s. Although the term was viewed as a marketing tool, and more of a cultural moment than a musical style or genre, its associated bands typically drew from the British pop music of the 1960s, glam rock and punk rock of the 1970s and indie pop of the 1980s. Louise Wener
Louise Jane Wener (born 30 July 1966, Gants Hill, London, England) is an English writer, singer, songwriter and guitarist of the band Sleeper. She is the younger daughter of Donald Wener, an Inland Revenue tax inspector from East Ham who had served in the RAF, and Audrey ('' née'' Dixon), a bank clerk and former nurse. She attended Manchester University where she met Jon Stewart, eventually leading to the formation of Sleeper. Her elder sister was the writer Sue Margolis. Their brother, Geoff, managed Sleeper after attending Cambridge University. Sleeper recorded three full-length albums prior to splitting: ''Smart'', '' The It Girl'', and '' Pleased to Meet You''. Stephen Brian Street (born 29 March 1960 in Hackney, London) is an English music producer best known for his work with The Smiths, The Cranberries and Blur. Street collaborated with Morrissey on his debut album ''Viva Hate'' following the split of The Smiths. More recently he has worked with Kaiser Chiefs, Babyshambles and The Courteeners. For a time, he was managed by Gail Colson's company Gailforce Management. In February 2020, Street received the award for Outstanding Contribution to UK Music at the Music Producer's Guild Awards. "Statuesque" is a song by Britpop band Sleeper, written by the band's vocalist and guitarist Louise Wener. "Statuesque" was the fourth and final single to be released from Sleeper's second album '' The It Girl'' and became the group's last top twenty hit on the UK Singles Chart. Background "Statuesque" soundtracked a key scene at the end of the 1996 hit movie ''Trainspotting'', and featured on the additional soundtrack album '' Trainspotting #2: Music from the Motion Picture, Vol. #2'' the following year. Sleeper had also covered Blondie's 1980 hit " Atomic", for the movie; a remix of the song backed the single formats, along with a remix of "Statuesque" by then '' Evening Session'' DJ Steve Lamacq. "Romeo Me" is a song by Britpop band Sleeper, written by the band's vocalist and guitarist Louise Wener. "Romeo Me" was the second and final single released from Sleeper's third album '' Pleased to Meet You'' and became the group's eighth and last top forty hit on the UK Singles Chart. "Romeo Me" was originally titled "Romeo & Juliet", and the chorus lyrics reference the titular couple, Mark Anthony and Cleopatra as well as Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, who feature on the cover art for the vinyl format. The Official Charts (legal name: The Official UK Charts Company Limited) is a British inter-professional organization that compiles various "official" record charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France.
