Shawnee Hills
The Shawnee Hills is a region of southern Illinois that rests mainly in an east-west arc roughly following the outline of the southern end of the Illinois Basin. Whereas Mississippian and Pennsylvania Age rock layers are deep beneath the soil surface in central Illinois, these strata pierce the surface in southern Illinois. The Shawnee Hills are surface expressions of the more weather-resistant limestone and sandstone layers. This formation is due in part to the last glaciation of the Ice Age (which tended to grind down hills and bury them under soil) not reaching this far south. Shawnee is the name used for a native American people, who historically resided in the Ohio Valley. The Shawnee Hills are often called the "Illinois Ozarks", especially in promotional literature for tourism. Shawnee National Forest
The Shawnee National Forest is a United States National Forest located in the Ozark and Shawnee Hills of Southern Illinois, United States. Administered by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, it consists of approximately 280,000 acres (1,100 km²) of federally managed lands. In descending order of land area it is located in parts of Pope, Jackson, Union, Hardin, Alexander, Saline, Gallatin, Johnson, and Massac counties. Forest headquarters are located in Harrisburg, Illinois. There are local ranger district offices in Jonesboro and Vienna. The Shawnee National Forest is also the single largest publicly owned body of land in the state of Illinois. Trail Of Tears State Forest

Trail of Tears was established in 1929 when Illinois purchased acres of Shawnee Hills land and used the resulting land to create the ''Kohn-Jackson Forest'' (later ''Union County State Forest''). The state park contains the historic Cave-In-Rock, a landmark of the Ohio River. Dixon Springs State Park
Dixon Springs State Park is an Illinois state park in Pope County, Illinois, United States, and is one of several state parks in the Illinois Shawnee Hills. The park is on a giant block of rock which was dropped along a fault that extends northwesterly across Pope County. The park is about west of Golconda on Illinois Route 146, near its junction with Illinois Route 145. The first land acquisition was in 1946. History The area around the park was occupied by various tribes of Algonquins who, after the Shawnee had been driven from Tennessee, had settled near the mouth of the Wabash River. Dixon Springs was one of their favorite camping grounds and was called "Kitchemuske-nee-be" for the Great Medicine Waters. Kinkaid Lake
Kinkaid Lake is a reservoir located in southwestern Illinois. Entirely within Jackson County, the lake is approximately northwest of Murphysboro and southeast of St. Louis. History and ownership Kinkaid Lake was built in 1968 with an average depth of 39 feet, although the area near the dam (on the southernmost tip) is approximately deep. Big Muddy River
The Big Muddy River is a river in southern Illinois. It joins the Mississippi River just south of Grand Tower. The Big Muddy has been dammed near Benton, forming Rend Lake. The Big Muddy has a mud bottom for most of its length. Hydrography The Big Muddy drains a watershed. In 1995, water quality was assessed as "fair" to "good". Pollution sources include agricultural practices, mining and municipalities. The watershed of the Big Muddy was covered by the Illinoian Glacier about 300,000 to 132,000 years before present. The Big Muddy basin formed after the retreat of that glacier. The Big Muddy was not covered by the Wisconsin Glacier, about 70,000 to 10,000 years before present. Ware, Illinois
Ware is an unincorporated community in Union County, Illinois, and is located near Jonesboro. History The earliest inhabitants of the area around Ware were of Late Woodland and Mississippian cultures. A village with four mounds was occupied between around 800 and 1300 A.D. One of the four mounds was destroyed in the construction of Illinois Route 3. The Ware Mounds and Village Site is situated just west of Ware. In January 1839, thousands of Cherokee Indians being forcibly relocated from their lands in Georgia to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) passed through Ware. Because of floating ice the Cherokee were unable to cross the Mississippi River and camped along Dutch Creek. The intense cold at this time led to many deaths. Grand Tower is a city in Jackson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 605 at the 2010 census. The town gets its name from Tower Rock, a landmark island in the Mississippi River. History Former names of this town include ''La Tour'' ("The Tower"), Jenkins Landing, Cochran's Woodyard Landing, and Evans' Landing.
