Shaw Tower (Vancouver)
Shaw Tower, located at 1067 W. Cordova St in Downtown Vancouver's Coal Harbour, in British Columbia, Canada, is home to Shaw Communications' headquarters for Lower Mainland Operations and credited to local architect James K. M. Cheng. The building stands at 489 feet (149 m) or 41 stories and was completed in 2004. It is currently the seventh-tallest building in Vancouver. The lower 16 floors of the tower are offices while the upper 24 floors contain 130 work-live condominiums. Shaw Communications, the building's namesake, occupies 11 full floors. The building has two official addresses: 1067 is the building's business address, while 1077 is the residential address. Shaw Tower, also sometimes referred to as Shaw Towers, is a defunct high-rise commercial building located on Beach Road in Singapore. At the time of its completion in 1975, the tower housed the largest cinema in Singapore. The building was part of the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s plans in the 1960s to create a “Golden Mile” stretch of mixed-use buildings that merged living, work, and play. History The construction of Shaw Tower was completed in 1975, on the site of the now-expunged Hoi How Road, and two previously existing cinemas: Alhambra Cinema and Marlborough Cinema. Shaw Tower is owned and managed by Shaw Towers Realty, a subsidiary of Shaw Organisation. The project was previously referred to as Shaw Mansion in newspaper articles dated to as early as 1972, and was then reported to cost S$36 million. Shaw Organisation is a film distribution company and cinema chain founded by brothers Runme Shaw and Run Run Shaw who went to Singapore in the 1920s to expand their family business founded by Runje Shaw. The company originally operated as a distributor for the Shaw brothers' Tianyi Film Company (also called Unique) in Shanghai. Run Run Shaw later moved to Hong Kong in the 1950s to run Shaw Brothers Studio, whilst Runme Shaw stayed in Singapore to continue Shaw Organisation's operations. Unlike Tianyi, Shaw Organisation does not produce films but distribute them in their theatres. History Shaw Organisation has a long history in Singapore since its founding in 1925.
