Richie Mehta is a Canadian film director and writer. His first feature film, ''Amal'', was released in 2008, and was nominated for Best Motion Picture and Best Director at the 29th Genie Awards. In 2013, Mehta released two films he wrote and directed - ''Siddharth'' (which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, before receiving over 25 International Awards); and ''I'll Follow You Down'', a science fiction film starring Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell. In October 2015, Mehta teamed up with Ridley Scott and Google, as the director of the documentary ''India in a Day,'' which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. ''Amal'' ( hi, अमल) is a 2007 Canadian drama film directed and written by Richie Mehta. Set in modern-day New Delhi, India, it tells the story of a poor autorickshaw driver, Amal Kumar. The film was originally released as a short film in 2004, with the same lead actor but a different cast, before it was adapted and expanded into a feature film after three years. Plot Amal Kumar (Rupinder Nagra) is an honest, punctual, hardworking sweet-natured autorickshaw driver who has two regular customers: the store merchant Pooja (Koel Purie) and a schoolboy who is the son of exacting lawyer Sapna Agarwal (Seema Biswas). Genie Award For Best Adapted Screenplay
The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television presents one or more annual awards for the Best Screenplay for a Canadian film. Originally presented in 1968 as part of the Canadian Film Awards, from 1980 until 2012 the award continued as part of the Genie Awards ceremony. As of 2013, it is presented as part of the Canadian Screen Awards. In their present form, two awards are presented for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, although historically this division was not always observed. 29th Genie Awards
The 29th Genie Awards were held on April 4, 2009, to honour Canadian films released in 2008. The ceremony was held at the Canadian Aviation Museum in Ottawa, Ontario, and was broadcast on Global and IFC. The ceremony was hosted by Dave Foley. Nominations were announced on February 10, 2009, and were led by Quebec films.
