Shastar Vidya ( pa, ਸ਼ਸਤਰ-ਵਿੱਦਿਆ), also known as Sanatan Shastar Vidya ( pa, ਸਨਾਤਨ ਸ਼ਸਤਰ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ), is a centuries-old Indian battlefield art which translates to "the science of weapons". History The battle art has existed in the subcontinent for thousands of years and been preserved by people from many different cultures and religions. Since the mid-16th century, the Sikh tribes of the Punjab became the chief custodians and masters of this fighting system. In North India it is believed that this art is the father of all martial arts. After the Anglo-Sikh wars the art was banned by the new British administrators of India in the mid-19th century. Gatka
Gatka (; ; hi, गतका; ur, ) is a form of martial art associated primarily with the Sikhs of the Punjab and other related ethnic groups, such as Hindkowans. It is a style of stick-fighting, with wooden sticks intended to simulate swords. The Punjabi name, , refers to the wooden stick used and this term might have originated as a diminutive of a Sanskrit word, , meaning "mace". Nidar Singh Nihang
Nidar Singh Nihang ( pa, ਨਿਡਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਿਹੰਗ; born 1967) is a British scholar, martial artist and grandmaster (Gurdev) of the ancient Indian martial art of Shastar Vidya. Career Nidar Singh Nihang is the only teacher & last surviving master of Shastar Vidiya and the ninth teacher of the Shastar Vidya Akhara - a martial arts school originally founded in 1661 by Baba Darbara Singh. For over 30 years he has dedicated himself entirely to the art; devoting well over 70 hours per week training and teaching others. He regards the Sikh community as the current custodian of Shastar Vidya which has been looked after by many different creeds and cultures over thousands of years as defender of Mullanpur Dhaka, and is looking for a successor to ensure the survival of the art form.
