Sharp Samurai
Sharp Samurai (foaled March 9, 2014) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and the winner of the 2018 City of Hope Mile Stakes. Career Sharp Samurai's first race was on November 5, 2016, at Santa Anita, where he came in 8th. He was able to pick up his first win in his next race on February 10, 2017, in a Maiden Claiming race at Santa Anita. He grabbed his first stakes win six races into his career, when he won the Rainbow Stakes on June 10, 2017, at Santa Anita. He defeated 2nd place finisher, Conquest Farenheit, by 1 and 1/4th lengths to win $75,000. This victory started a four win race streak. His next victory came on August 6, 2017, when he captured his first graded stakes win - the Grade-3 La Jolla Handicap. He came in at 1:1 odds as the favorite and defeated Fashion Business by a length. On September 3, 2017, he picked up a Grade-2 win at the Del Mar Derby. First Samurai (horse)
First Samurai is a thoroughbred race horse born February 2, 2003. He was a contender for the Triple Crown in 2006, but a starting gate incident contributed to his defeat in the Blue Grass Stakes. Two weeks after the race, First Samurai was diagnosed with two broken ribs following an ultrasound. He was not entered in the Kentucky Derby, with his injury cited as the reason. Giants Causeway
The Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. The Twilight Derby is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for three years olds over the distance of one-and-one-eighth miles on the turf scheduled annually in October at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Del Mar Derby
The Caesars Sportsbook Del Mar Derby is an American thoroughbred horse race run annually during the first week of September at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. A Grade II race open to three-year-old horses, it is contested on turf over a distance of one and one-eighth miles (9 furlongs). Inaugurated in 1945 as the Quigley Memorial Handicap at a distance of miles on dirt, it was renamed in 1948, modified to its present distance in 1950, and moved to turf in 1970. It was raced in two divisions in 1963, in 1970, and again in 2013. In 2013, 24 sophomores passed the entry box so the race had to be split into two divisions. The Cinema Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old horses held annually at Santa Anita Park Arcadia, California. Raced on turf originally over a distance of one and one-eighth miles (9 furlongs) in late May or early June. In 2023, the race was extended to one and one-quarter miles (10 furlongs). History The event was inaugurated in 1946 at Hollywood Park Racetrack. The race was run in two divisions in 1961 and 1963. It was not run in 1974. In 1973 the event was given Grade II status. It held this classification until 1994 when it was downgraded to Grade III. The event was not held from 2010 to 2018. The La Jolla Handicap is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds over a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on the turf scheduled annually in August at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. The event was inaugurated on July 11, 1937, as an event for three-year-olds and older and was won by the five-year-old mare Topsy Omar by the shortest of margins defeating the favorite Grey Count in a time of 1:45. The American Stakes is a Grade III American thoroughbred horse race for horses age three and older over a distance of one mile on the turf track held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California in June. The race currently offers a purse of $100,000. History The event was inaugurated on Independence Day in 1938 as the American Handicap, when Bing Crosby's and Lindsay C. Howard's Argentine bred Ligorati set a new track record of 1:50 for the miles feature on the dirt track before a crowd of 60,000 at Hollywood Park Racetrack. The event was regularly scheduled for many of its runnings on the Fourth of July holiday attracting massive crowds especially in the 1950s and 1960s. United (foaled April 7, 2015, in Kentucky) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and winner of multiple top-level stakes races for owners Larry and Nanci Roth and their daughter Jaime. Career United's first race was on May 27, 2018, at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, where he came in 5th. On July 4, 2018, he picked up his win first in a Maiden Special Weight race at Woodbine. This was his last win of the season and his last until April 6, 2019, when he won an Allowance Optional Claiming race. He competed in his first stakes race on May 25, 2019, when he came in 2nd place at the 2019 Charles Whittingham Stakes. This would be the start of four straight podium finishes at stakes races, as he finished 3rd at the 2019 John Henry Turf Championship Stakes, 2nd at the 2019 Breeders' Cup Turf and 2nd at the 2019 Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes.
