Sharon Indian School
Sharon Indian School, also known as Indian View, is a historic school building located at King William, King William County, Virginia. The original 1919 Sharon School was a one-room, vernacular frame structure raised on brick piers. It was built for members of the Upper Mattaponi tribe, led by Mollie Holmes Adams and her husband, Jasper. The original school is thought to have been razed around 1964. The extant 1952 Sharon School was designed by architect C.W. Huff, Jr., in association with architect Edward F. Sinnott (Richmond, VA). King William is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of King William County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 census was 252. Located in King William is the oldest courthouse in continuous use in the United States, built in 1725. The community is also known as King William Courthouse or, by an alternative spelling, King William Court House. Mollie Holmes Adams
Mollie Wade Holmes Adams (October 8, 1881 – December 14, 1973) was an Upper Mattaponi tribal elder and advocate of tribal culture in Virginia. She advocated for recognition of the tribe and worked to preserve traditional skills and knowledge. She was selected for the Virginia Women in History program by the Library of Virginia. Biography Mollie Wade Holmes was born in 1881, into the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, or Adamstown Band of Mattaponi, and grew up in great poverty in Adamstown. In 1900 she married Jasper Lewis Adams, who served as chief of the tribe for five decades, from 1923 to 1973. She joined him as a tribal leader; he was involved in the purchase and construction of the Sharon Indian School in 1919 and the Indian View Baptist Church in 1942. The couple had twelve children.
