Shared Belief Stakes
The Shared Belief Stakes (formerly the El Cajon Stakes) is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually during the last week of August or the first week of September at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. Open to three-year-old horses, the non-graded stakes is contested at a distance of one mile (8 furlongs) on the dirt. The purse is currently $100,000. The race is named for champion Shared Belief, whose major wins included the 2014 Pacific Classic at Del Mar. It was previously named for the city of El Cajon, California. Inaugurated in 1973, the race was run as a restricted overnight stakes until 2004. The distance was set at one and one eight miles in 1973 and 1974, then reduced to a mile and a sixteenth from 1975 through 1996 after which it was set at its current distance of one mile. Del Mar Racetrack
The Del Mar Fairgrounds is a event venue in Del Mar, California. The annual San Diego County Fair is held here, which was called the Del Mar Fair from 1984 to 2001. In 1936, the Del Mar Racetrack was built by the Thoroughbred Club with founding member Bing Crosby providing leadership. The Fairgrounds is owned by the State of California and is managed by the 22nd District Agricultural Association, a state agency that hosts more than 300 annual events. Its staff organizes four major annual events, including the annual San Diego County Fair, and runs Surfside Race Place, the year-round satellite horse racing facility. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club leases the facilities for their live meets each year. Medina Spirit
Medina Spirit (April 5, 2018 – December 6, 2021) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who finished first in the 2021 Kentucky Derby before being disqualified. He came second in the 2021 Breeders' Cup Classic and third in the 2021 Preakness Stakes. Medina Spirit qualified for the Kentucky Derby with a win in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes and second place finishes in the San Felipe Stakes and Santa Anita Derby. In the Kentucky Derby he was a long shot with post-time odds of 12–1. He crossed the finish line first in the Derby, but was later disqualified after testing positive for the anti-inflammatory steroid betamethasone. After the Kentucky Derby, Medina Spirit finished third in the Preakness Stakes, but a few days later the New York racing officials banned Medina Spirit and his trainer Bob Baffert from participating in the Belmont Stakes because of the drug violations. Island Whirl
Island Whirl (foaled March 17, 1978) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse and the winner of the 1983 Whitney Handicap. Career Island Whirl's first race was on May 31, 1980, at Calder, where he came in 8th. It took him until his 3rd race on October 29, 1980, at Calder, to capture a win. Island Whirl captured his first stakes win on September 4, 1981, at the El Cajon Stakes. He then captured his second stakes win at the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs. Island Whirl captured his first graded race win on January 3, 1982, by winning the Malibu Stakes. He competed in multiple other graded races throughout 1982, but did not see another graded win until he won the 1982 Woodward Stakes on September 4. His wins throughout 1982 helped him gain entry to the 1982 Jockey Club Gold Cup, where he placed 4th. American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt
The American Champion Two-Year-Old Male Horse is an American Thoroughbred horse racing honor awarded annually in Thoroughbred flat racing. It became part of the Eclipse Awards program in 1971. The award originated in 1936 when the ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) began naming an annual champion. In the same year, the Baltimore-based ''Turf and Sports Digest'' magazine instituted a similar award. Starting in 1950, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) began naming its own champion. Tasso (horse)
Tasso (foaled April 20, 1983, in Florida) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was named the Champion two-year-old of 1985 after winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Background Tasso was bred by Gerald Robbins and Timothy Sams of Waldemar Farm, subsequently renamed Stonehedge Farm South. Out of the mare Ecstacism, Tasso was from the first crop of Fappiano, a son of the very influential Champion sire Mr. Prospector. Tasso's wins as a two-year-old helped make Fappiano the leading freshman sire of 1985. In the Fasig-Tipton Florida sales of 1984, Tasso was sold for $100,000 to Bertram Firestone, but Firestone was reportedly dissatisfied and returned the colt. Gimme Da Lute
Gimme Da Lute (March 13, 2012 – November 6, 2015) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and graded stakes winner. Career Gimme Da Lute won his first race in his second start at age three. After that he won the Echo Eddie Stakes then followed that with third-place finishes in the Chick Lang and Pat Day Mile Stakes. He got his first big stakes victory in the Affirmed Handicap after which he won the Los Alamitos Derby, the most important victory in his career. Gimme Da Lute only ran two more times after that with wins in the Real Good Deal Stakes for California-bred 3-year-olds, and the El Cajon Stakes. Death After he won the El Cajon, Gimme Da Lute suffered a hind leg fracture while working out at Santa Anita Park. A week later he underwent surgery that at first seemed to be successful. Improbable (foaled February 11, 2016) is a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who was the 2020 Champion Older Dirt Male after winning three Grade One races; the Hollywood Gold Cup, Whitney Stakes, and Awesome Again Stakes. He also came second in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Classic, won the 2018 Los Alamitos Futurity, and came fourth in the 2019 Kentucky Derby as the favorite.
