Shamil Sabirov
Shamil Altaevich Sabirov (russian: Шамиль Алтаевич Сабиров; born 4 April 1959) is a retired Russian light-flyweight boxer. He won gold medals at the 1979 European Championships and 1980 Olympics, becoming the only boxing champion from the Soviet Union at the Moscow Olympics. Sabirov took up boxing in 1973 and retired in 1985 with a record of 160 wins in 180 bouts. Karpinsk (russian: Карпи́нск) is a town in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia, located on the Turya River ( Ob's basin), north of Yekaterinburg, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: The town is named for mineralogist and geologist Alexander Karpinsky. History The settlement of Bogoslovsk () was founded in either 1759 or in 1769. It remained one of the largest copper production centers in the Urals until 1917. Coal deposits started to be mined in 1911. In 1941, the settlement of Bogoslovsky () merged with the nearby settlement of Ugolny () to form the town of Karpinsk. Light flyweight, also known as junior flyweight or super strawweight, is a weight class in boxing. Professional boxing The weight limit at light flyweight in professional boxing is 108 pounds (49 kilograms). When New York legalized boxing in 1920, the law stipulated a "junior flyweight" class, with a weight limit of 99 pounds. When the National Boxing Association was formed in 1921, it also recognized this weight class. However, on January 19, 1922, the NBA decided to withdraw recognition of the junior flyweight division. On December 31, 1929, the New York State Athletic Commission also abolished the junior flyweight class. No champion had been crowned in this division prior to its abolition. Unified Sports Classification System of the USSR (russian: Единая Всесоюзная спортивная классификация) is a document which provided general Soviet physical education system requirements for both athletes and coaches. Similar systems still exist today in several former Soviet republics. Athletes The classification was established in 1935 and was based on separate classifications, which existed for several sports disciplines before. Starting in 1949, it was revised every four years, the period, which corresponded to the Olympic cycle, to reflect new standards for the physical training.
