Shakira Austin
Shakira Austin (born July 25, 2000) is an American professional basketball player for Washington Mystics of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She played college basketball at Maryland and Ole Miss. Playing career College career Austin was rated as the fourth ranked player in the nation in the 2018 recruiting class and the second ranked forward. She was also a 2018 McDonald's High School All-American. Austin signed with Maryland out of high school. Following her first season at Maryland in 2018–19, Austin was selected to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team after a school record 89 blocks. Following Austin's second and final season at Maryland in 2019–20, she was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team. After her sophomore season at Maryland, Austin announced her transfer to Ole Miss. The 2018–19 Maryland Terrapins women's basketball team represented the University of Maryland, College Park in 2018–19 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Terrapins, led by seventeenth year head coach Brenda Frese, played their home games at the Xfinity Center as members of the Big Ten Conference. They finished the season 29–4, 15–3 in Big Ten play to win the Big Ten regular season championship. They advanced to the championship of the Big Ten women's tournament where they lost to Iowa State. McDonald's High School All-Americans
The McDonald's All-American Game is the all-star basketball game played each year for American and Canadian boys' and girls' high school basketball graduates. Consisting of the top players, each team plays a single exhibition game after the conclusion of the high-school basketball season, in an East vs. West format. As part of the annual event, boys and girls compete in a slam dunk contest and a three-point shooting competition, and compete alongside All-American Game alumni in a timed team shootout. The last of these competitions replaced separate overall timed skills competitions for boys and girls. It is rare for girls to compete in the slam dunk contest. They have, however, won it three times—in 2004 by Candace Parker, in 2019 by Fran Belibi, and most recently in 2022 by Ashlyn Watkins. 2022 WNBA Playoffs
The 2022 WNBA Playoffs was the postseason tournament of the WNBA's 2022 season. This postseason ended with the Las Vegas Aces winning their first championship. Format In November 2021, the WNBA Board of Governors formalized a new playoff system that will structure the 2022 playoffs onward. The new playoff format scraps the single-elimination games of the first two rounds in favor of a best-of-3 quarterfinal round. As a result, all eight playoff teams, seeded according to overall regular season record regardless of conference (1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, 4 vs. 5), will begin postseason play in the first round. Since 2016, seeds 3 and 4 received a bye to the second round (single game) and seeds 1 and 2 received a bye to the semifinals (best-of-5). 2022 Washington Mystics Season
The 2022 Washington Mystics season is the franchise's 25th season in the Women's National Basketball Association. The regular season will tip off versus the Indiana Fever on May 6, 2022. The Mystics won the Draft Lottery and received the 1st Overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft, despite only having the third best odds to win. This is the first time in franchise history that the Mystics had the #1 Overall pick. The team traded the pick to Atlanta and moved down to the third overall pick in the Draft. 2022 WNBA Season
The 2022 WNBA season was the 26th season of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Chicago Sky were the defending champions. The WNBA's second Commissioner's Cup took place during the regular season, with the Las Vegas Aces winning over the Sky. In the playoffs, the Aces were the first seed and won the Finals over the Connecticut Sun. The regular season was expanded to 36 games per team, is the most games scheduled in a single WNBA season. A 36-game season was originally scheduled for 2020, but the plan was scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
