Shakib Qortbawi
Shakib Qortbawi (born 1945) is a Lebanese businessman and politician. He served as the minister of justice between June 2011 and February 2014. Early life and education Qortbawi was born in 1945 into a Maronite family. He received a bachelor's degree in law from Saint Joseph University in 1967. Career Qortbawi was the president of Beirut bar association from 1995 to 1997. Then he began to serve as a member of the legal commission to the Lebanese cabinet and legal commission for the modernization and unification of laws at the ministry of justice. His tenure lasted from 2001 to 2004. In April 2001, he cofounded the Qornet Shehwan Gathering together with nearly thirty Christian politicians. However, after the general elections held in 2000, he left the bloc. He was a member of the national committee of the civil center for national initiative, which was founded by Lebanese politicians and intellectuals in July 2007. Established in 1920, the Ministry of Justice of Lebanon ( ar, وزارة العدل) is one of the ministries of the Lebanese government. The first incarnation of the ministry was the Department of Justice, Property and Endowments which was headed by the Director of Justice. By 1959, the ministry adopted its current name and its objectives of organizing and administering the judiciary of Lebanon had long been underscored by various decrees. The formation of a new government led by Najib Mikati follows five months of negotiations after the fall of the Saad Hariri government. Mikati formed a controversial 30-minister cabinet. Following ruptures and tensions and two previous threats to resign, Mikati finally resigned on 23 March 2013. Tammam Salam was tasked to form a new government on 6 April 2013. Background The Hariri government fell after the withdrawal on March 8 of members from his cabinet following refusals to end cooperation with the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. President Michel Suleiman then tasked Mikati to form a new government amid concerns of instability. Mikati was nominated for office by Hezbollah, Michel Aoun and Walid Jumblatt in January 2011. Lebanese Maronite Christians ( ar, المسيحية المارونية في لبنان; syc, ܡܫܝܚܝ̈ܐ ܡܪ̈ܘܢܝܐ ܕܠܒܢܢ) are adherents of the Maronite Church in Lebanon, which is the largest Christian denomination in the country.
