Shaharut
Shaharut ( he, שַׁחֲרוּת, ar, شَحَرُوتْ – ''šaḥarūt'') is a community settlement in the far south of Israel. Located 40 kilometers north of Eilat, and six kilometers west of Yotvata on a ridge above the Arabah valley, it falls under the jurisdiction of Hevel Eilot Regional Council. In it had a population of . History The village was founded in 1985 by the Jewish Agency and was named after the nearby Shaharut Mountain; the word "Shaharut" means "youth", as in Ecclesiastes chapter 11. Hevel Eilot Regional Council ( he, מועצה אזורית חבל אילות, ''Mo'atza Azorit Hevel Eilot'') is a regional council in the Southern District of Israel, near the city of Eilat. It is the southernmost regional council in Israel. Only about 5,300 people live in the council in twelve communities. Its area is about 2.2 million dunams. The major city of the region, Eilat, governs itself as a city council and is not included in the regional council. History Hevel Eilot Regional Council was established in 1964. A community settlement ( he, יישוב קהילתי, ''Yishuv Kehilati'') is a type of village in Israel and the West Bank. While in an ordinary town anyone may buy property, in a community settlement the village's residents are organized in a cooperative. They have the power to approve or veto a sale of a house or a business to any buyer. Residents of a community settlement may have a particular shared ideology, religious perspective, or desired lifestyle which they wish to perpetuate by accepting only like-minded individuals.
