James McMillan Shafter
James McMillan Shafter (May 27, 1816 – August 29, 1892) was an Americans, American politician who served in Vermont, Wisconsin, and California, and owned large ranches in Marin County, California. Biography Born in Athens, Vermont, Shafter graduated from Wesleyan University and Yale Law School, and was admitted to the Vermont bar. In 1841, he served in the Vermont House of Representatives and from 1842 to 1849, Shafter was the Secretary of State of Vermont. In 1850, he moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin and was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly. In 1852, Shafter served as speaker of the Assembly. In 1855, he then moved to San Francisco, California, where he practiced law with his brother, Oscar L. Shafter. In 1857, a complex real estate litigation resulted in the Shafter firm winning a victory for their client of 75,000 acres of farm land at Point Reyes, California, Point Reyes in Marin County. William Rufus Shafter
William Rufus Shafter (October 16, 1835 – November 12, 1906) was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War who received America's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions at the Battle of Fair Oaks. Shafter also played a prominent part as a major general in the Spanish–American War. Fort Shafter, Hawaii, is named for him, as well as the city of Shafter, California and the ghost town of Shafter, Texas. He was nicknamed "Pecos Bill", inspiration for the fictional character of the same name in tall tales. Early life Shafter was born in Galesburg, Michigan on October 16, 1835. Shafter was German-American. He worked as a teacher and farmer in the years preceding the Civil War. Shafter is a city in Kern County, California, United States. It is located west-northwest of Bakersfield. The population was 16,988 at the 2010 census, up from 12,736 at the 2000 census. The city is located along State Route 43. Suburbs of Shafter include Myricks Corner, North Shafter, Smith Corner, and Thomas Lane. History The city of Shafter began as a loading dock along the Santa Fe Railroad (former San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad) right-of-way. The community was named for General William Rufus Shafter who commanded US Forces in Cuba during the Spanish–American War. Property was sold beginning in 1914 and the city incorporated on January 11, 1938. The first post office opened in 1898, moved in 1902, closed in 1905. A new postal service started in 1914. Also of historical note, Shafter is home to Minter Field, which began operations in June 1941 and saw heavy use during World War II. Shafter, Missouri
Shafter is an unincorporated community in northwest Linn County, in the central region of the U.S. state of Missouri. It was named after General William Rufus Shafter, a Union Army general during the American Civil War. The town has a population of approximately 500 residents. The community is on Missouri Route DD one mile east of Missouri Route 139. Parson Creek flows past the west side of the community. History Shafter was established in the late 19th century and was primarily a farming community. It is located on the Missouri River and is situationed near the Mark Twain National Forest. A post office called Shafter was established in 1898, and remained in operation until 1906. Shafter is a ghost town in Presidio County, Texas. The Texas Attorney General's Office gives a population of 11 as of the 2000 Census. It was named in honor of General William R. Shafter, who at one point commanded the nearby (relatively speaking) Fort Davis. As of 2012, at least one silver mine, La Mina Grande, has been reopened by Aurcana Corporation. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Shafter Historic Mining District. History Tucked in the Chinati Mountains on Cibolo Creek, 18 miles north of Presidio, Shafter was once a bustling mining town with a population as high as 4000, in 1940. In 1880 or 1881, John Spencer found silver deposits near this location. Capt. (later Gen.) William R. Shafter, stationed at Fort Davis, and Spencer collaborated to establish the mining operation.
