Shafi Hadi
__NOTOC__ Shafi Hadi (born Curtis Porter, 21 September 1929 – 1976) was an American jazz tenor and alto saxophonist known for his recordings with Charles Mingus and with Hank Mobley. Biography Hadi was born Curtis Porter in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The 1930 Census indicated his parents were William Porter and Harriette Porter. At age 6, he received piano lessons from his grandmother. Later, he studied musical composition at Howard University and University of Detroit. Hadi performed with rhythm and blues artists such as Paul Williams, Ruth Brown, and the Griffin Brothers. Hadi recorded with bassist Charles Mingus between 1956 and 1958. He also recorded with tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley. Hadi improvised the soundtrack music for John Cassavetes's film ''Shadows'', then returned to Mingus's group in 1959. Martin Tudor Hansford Williams (9 August 1924 – 11 or 12 April 1992) was an American jazz critic and writer. Education and service in the armed forces Williams was born in Richmond, Virginia. He attended St. Christopher's School, Richmond, St. Christopher Episcopal Preparatory School, then entered the U.S. Army during World War II. After his military service during World War II, which included Battle of Iwo Jima, Williams first studied law, then literature at the University of Virginia (Bachelor of Arts, BA 1948), at the University of Pennsylvania (Master of Arts, MA 1950) and at Columbia University. ''Mingus Ah Um'' is a studio album by American jazz musician Charles Mingus which was released in October 1959 by Columbia Records. It was his first album recorded for Columbia. The cover features a painting by S. Neil Fujita. The title is a corruption of an imaginary Latin declension. It is common for Latin students to memorize Latin adjectives by first saying the masculine nominative (usually ending in " ''-us''"), then the feminine nominative (" ''-a''"), and finally the neuter nominative singular (" ''-um''")—implying a transformation of his name, ''Mingus, Minga, Mingum''. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013. ''A Modern Jazz Symposium of Music and Poetry'' is an album by the jazz bassist, composer, and band leader Charles Mingus, released by Bethlehem Records in mid-1959. In spite of the title, the album does not contain any poetry. "Scenes in the City", however, includes narration performed by Mel Stewart and written by actor Lonne Elder with assistance from Langston Hughes. The composition "Duke's Choice" re-appears, in updated form, as "I X Love" on the 1963 album '' Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus''.Nat Hentoff identifies "Nouroog" as the precursor to "I X Love". "Nouroog", "Duke's Choice" and "Slippers" form the basis of the suite "Open Letter to Duke" on ''Mingus Ah Um''. Bethlehem Records was an American jazz independent record label, founded by Gus Wildi in 1953. History Bethlehem is remembered for its jazz releases from the 1950s. Producers included Creed Taylor and Teddy Charles. Bethlehem released the first albums recorded by singers Chris Connor (the dual releases ''Chris Connor Sings Lullabys for Lovers'' and ''Chris Connor Sings Lullabys of Birdland'') in 1954, Nina Simone ('' Little Girl Blue'') in 1958, and singer/actress Julie London. ''Tijuana Moods'' is an album by Charles Mingus, recorded in 1957 but not released until June 1962. It was reissued in 1986 on CD as ''New Tijuana Moods'' with four additional alternate takes and as a double LP with five alternate takes. Two-CD expanded versions with further alternate takes were issued by RCA in 2000 and by Columbia in 2010. In his notes to the 1986 reissue, Ed Michel said that " rdly anything was recorded as a complete take" and so both the originally issued takes and the alternate versions had been assembled by editing additional sections into base takes. The name "Charlie Mingus" appears on the cover of the original album. The Clown (album)
''The Clown'' is an album by Charles Mingus, released in September 1957 on Atlantic Records as SD-1260. It is the follow-up to 1956's '' Pithecanthropus Erectus'' and features the improvised narration of Jean Shepherd. A deluxe edition of ''The Clown'' was issued in 2000 on Rhino featuring two bonus tracks. All the tracks were recorded on March 12, 1957, except for "The Clown", recorded on February 13 of the same year. According to Nat Hentoff's liner notes, Mingus explained why he chose those four tracks for the album: "I selected these four over two others that were more intricate because some of those guys had been saying that I didn't swing. So I made some that did. This album also has the first blues I've made on record."
