Shada Islam is a Brussels-based commentator on Asia and on EU affairs. She is a Belgian citizen. In 2017, ''Politico'' listed Islam among 20 women who are driving Europe’s major political debates. Politico designated Islam as "the ultimate insider outsider." Early life Islam was born in Lahore in Pakistan. She moved to Brussels as a student. Islam graduated in journalism and social communication from the Université libre de Bruxelles. Career Journalism After graduating Islam joined the Far Eastern Economic Review, where she was a Europe correspondent for more than 20 years. In February 2022, Islam took the position of editor of the EUobserver magazine publication. Viktor Orbán
Viktor Mihály Orbán (; born 31 May 1963) is a Hungarian politician who has served as prime minister of Hungary since 2010, previously holding the office from 1998 to 2002. EU Scream
EU Scream is a podcast based in Brussels. EU Scream was set up in 2018 by Tom Brookes from the European Climate Foundation and by James Kanter from ''The New York Times''. James Kanter had left the New York Times before the launch of EU Scream. EU Scream's episodes consist of interviews with European politicians, journalists, academics, activists and representatives of the civil society. The interviews often include personal aspects of the life of European politicians, for example the experience of being bullying at school shared on EU Scream by the Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans. The Brussels So White (or #BrusselsSoWhite) movement is an informal movement denouncing the lack of racial diversity in the European Union institutions in Brussels. Origin of the term The hashtag BrusselsSoWhite first appeared in an article by Politico in 2017 written by Ryan Heath. The article featured a collage of the portraits of all of the 751 Members of the European Parliament accompanied by the hashtag BrusselsSoWhite. James Kanter
James Kanter is an American and British journalist based in Brussels. Kanter helped establish the first independent newspaper in Cambodia after the fall of the Khmer Rouge rule, The Cambodia Daily, where he served as editor in chief from 1995 to 1997. Kanter was the correspondent for the ''International Herald Tribune'' and ''The New York Times'' in Brussels for 12 years until leaving the paper in 2017 to launch EU Scream in 2018, a podcast on European affairs.
