Shabs Jobanputra
Shabir "Shabs" Jobanputra is a UK music business figure, whose Outcaste and Relentless labels have had a sufficient impact on British popular culture to place him in the top 20 of ''The Guardian''s list of the most influential ethnic minority figures in the media. He is currently MD of Relentless Records, which was re-launched as a stand alone division of Sony Music in January 2012. Early life and career beginnings Born at Mbale in Uganda on 19 September 1967, his father a Hindu factory manager and mother an Ismaili Muslim, Jobanputra was forced to leave Uganda in 1972 when Idi Amin expelled the country’s Asian population. Relentless Records
Relentless Records is a British boutique and independent record label currently headed by co-founder Shabs Jobanputra. Originally known for UK garage singles such as Artful Dodger's " Re-Rewind" and B-15 Project's " Girls Like Us", Relentless has also published albums by Joss Stone, KT Tunstall, Union of Knives and Cage the Elephant. Ownership Relentless Records was formally registered as a company on 1 December 1999. After first working with Virgin Records in 2003, the label was sold to it in 2009 (when Virgin was at that time a label of EMI Records). Affected by the November 2011 dissolution of EMI Group (the parent company of Virgin Records), Virgin's recorded music business was sold to Universal Music UK, a division of Universal Music Group. Shut Up And Dance (band)
Shut Up and Dance are an English duo that fused hip hop, house and hardcore. They are acknowledged as one of the pioneers of breakbeat hardcore and jungle music. Career The group was formed in 1988 in Stoke Newington, London, by Philip 'PJ' Johnson and Carlton 'Smiley' Hyman. In 1990, they made the lower end of the UK chart with two singles, "£20 to Get In" and "Lamborghini", both released on their own record label, Shut Up and Dance Records. At this time, they also worked with the Ragga Twins for the first time and produced their first releases. "Re-Rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta)" is a song by English garage duo Artful Dodger, featuring Craig David on vocals. Released in the United Kingdom on 29 November 1999, the song reached number two, giving both Artful Dodger and David their first chart hit. In his dean's list for the annual Pazz & Jop critics' poll, Robert Christgau of ''The Village Voice'' named "Re-Rewind" the fifth-best single of the year. Artful Dodger are a UK garage duo, originally based in the city Southampton, which became famous for its 2-step garage, 2-step hits and inaugurated Craig David's professional musical career with his appearance on their 1999 number-two hit "Re-Rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta), Re-Rewind". They scored seven consecutive UK top-20 hit singles from 1999 to 2001. Beyond Skin
''Beyond Skin'' is an album by English musician Nitin Sawhney. It was released on the Outcaste label in 1999. The album focuses largely on the theme of nuclear weapons; Sawhney states in the booklet that the album "has a timespan that runs backwards", beginning at "Broken Skin" with the India-Pakistan nuclear situation and ending at "Beyond Skin" with Robert Oppenheimer quoting the Bhagavad Gita – "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds". Sawhney also aims to question what constitutes one's identity – he writes in the liner notes for the album: "I believe in Hindu philosophy. I am not religious. I am a pacifist. I am a British Asian. The South Bank Sky Arts Awards (originally The South Bank Show Awards) are an accolade recognizing British achievements in the arts. The awards have been given annually since 1997. They originated with the long-running British arts programme ''The South Bank Show'' and Melvyn Bragg, who has served as patron, host and master of ceremonies of the awards since their inception.
