Sha Na Na (TV Series)
''Sha Na Na'' is a syndicated television variety series that ran from 1977 to 1981 for a total of 97 episodes, hosted by the popular rock & roll/comedy group of the same name. The show was produced by Pierre Cossette and originally distributed by the Lexington Broadcast Services Company. Each episode ran for 22 minutes. The show featured the group performing hits from the 1950s and 1960s along with comedy skits along the show's nostalgic theme but with a contemporary twist, with performances from that era's well-known acts as well as popular acts of the 1970s. Among the supporting cast members featured in the series were: Jane Dulo, Pamela Myers, Avery Schreiber, Kenneth Mars and Phil Roth (Season 1); June Gable and Soupy Sales (Seasons 2 to 4); Michael Sklar (Season 2); and Karen Hartman (Season 4). Gary Jacobs (writer)
Gary Jacobs is an American television comedy writer and producer and author. He was born in New York in 1952, grew up in Dallas, and was educated at the University of Texas at Austin, where he received his bachelor's degree in Journalism. Immediately upon graduation, Jacobs moved to New York to pursue comedy writing. His first job was at the Children's Television Workshop, where he became co-editor (with Ron Barrett) of ''The Electric Company Magazine'', a companion piece to the television series. A couple of years later, Jacobs landed his first television job, writing for ''The Dick Cavett Show''. Jacobs then moved to Los Angeles, and began accumulating credits, writing for both variety shows and situation comedies. His big break came when he was hired (with writing partner, Arnie Kogen) on the staff of ''Newhart''. June Gable
June Gable (born June Golub) is an American character actress, perhaps best known for her role as Joey's agent Estelle Leonard in the NBC sitcom ''Friends''. She also played a Nurse in the delivery room in season 1 episode 23 “The One With The Birth.” She received a Tony Award nomination for her work on Broadway. Life and career Gable studied acting at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Jon "Bowzer" Bauman
Jon "Bowzer" Bauman (born September 14, 1947) is an American singer, best known as a member of the band Sha Na Na, and game show host. Bauman's Sha Na Na character, "Bowzer", was a greaser in a muscle shirt. Biography and career Bauman was born in Brooklyn, New York. He started attending The Juilliard School at age 12 with an expertise in piano playing, and is a 1964 graduate of Martin Van Buren High School in Queens Village, Queens. He then attended Columbia University, graduating in 1968. Bauman was a member of the band Sha Na Na between 1970 and 1983. He was featured in the television comedy/variety show ''Sha Na Na'' from 1977 to 1981. In his "Bowzer" persona, Bauman became instantly recognizable for his "greaser" clothes and hair, his muscular pose with his arm, and his catchphrase "Grease for Peace!". Sha Na Na
Sha Na Na was an American rock and roll doo-wop group. Formed in 1969, but performing a song-and-dance repertoire based on 1950s hit songs, it simultaneously revived and parodied the music and the New York street culture of the 1950s. After gaining initial fame for their performance at Woodstock, made possible with the help of their friend Jimi Hendrix, the group hosted ''Sha Na Na'', a syndicated variety series that ran from 1977 to 1981. Billing themselves as "from the streets of New York", members were frequently outfitted in gold lamé or leather jackets and sported pompadour or ducktail hairdos. The group's name was taken from a series of nonsense syllables ("Sha Na Na Na Sha Na Na Na Na") in the song " Get a Job", originally recorded by the Silhouettes. The Lexington Broadcast Services Company (first known as Lexington Broadcast Services and later known as LBS Communications) was a television production and syndication company formed on November 15, 1976, by advertising pioneer Henry Siegel, who, according to ''Advertising Age'', was "the man who built Lexington Broadcast Services into the nation's largest barter syndicator, and thus defined that segment of the TV ad business." Pierre Cossette
Pierre Maurice Joseph Cossette (December 15, 1923 – September 11, 2009) was a television executive producer and Broadway producer. Cossette produced the first television broadcast of the Grammy Awards in 1971. Cossette was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2005. Born in Valleyfield, Quebec, he also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2006, a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs, California, Walk of Stars was dedicated to him. Michael Joel Sklar (July 12, 1944 – March 5, 1984) was an American actor, writer, songwriter, and fashion retailer. He was best known as a Warhol superstar, starring in multiple films by Warhol and Paul Morrissey before his death.
