Seán Calleary
Seán Calleary (27 October 1931 – 4 June 2018) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who served as a Minister of State (Ireland), Minister of State from 1979 to 1981, from October to December 1982, and from 1987 to 1992. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Mayo East (Dáil constituency), Mayo East constituency from 1973 to 1992. His father Phelim Calleary had been a TD for the Mayo North (Dáil constituency), Mayo North constituency from 1952 to 1969. A native of Ballina, County Mayo, Ballina, County Mayo, he was educated at Garbally College in Ballinasloe, County Galway and University College Galway where he graduated with a degree civil engineering. He was a member of Mayo County Council from 1967 to 1987, before he became a Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo East from 1973 to 1992. 2007 Irish General Election
The 2007 Irish general election took place on Thursday, 24 May after the dissolution of the 29th Dáil by the President on 30 April, at the request of the Taoiseach. The general election took place in 43 parliamentary constituencies throughout Ireland for 166 seats in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of parliament, with a revision of constituencies since the last election under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2005. While Fine Gael gained 20 seats, Fianna Fáil remained the largest party. The election was considered a success for Fianna Fáil; however, Fianna Fáil's junior coalition partners in the 29th Dáil, the Progressive Democrats, lost six of their eight seats. Mayo is a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. The constituency elects 4 deputies ( Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) on the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). History At the 2002 general election Fine Gael suffered its worst electoral performance ever, losing 23 seats nationally, a figure larger than expected and with its overall vote down 5%. Mayo County Council ( ga, Comhairle Contae Mhaigh Eo) is the authority responsible for local government in County Mayo, Ireland. As a county council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation, urban planning and development, amenity and culture, and environment. The council has 30 elected members.
