Seán Brosnahan (1911 – 9 December 1987) was an Irish Independent politician. He was a trade union official and general secretary of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation. Seán Brosnan
Seán Brosnan (21 December 1916 – 18 April 1979) was an Irish barrister and Fianna Fáil politician. He served for 10 years in the Oireachtas, as a Teachta Dála (TD) and as a senator. Brosnan was a native of Dingle, County Kerry. He was a prominent Gaelic footballer and won 3 All-Ireland medals with Kerry. In 1939, he was captain of the team but could not play in the final due to influenza. In 1933, he won an All-Ireland Minor Football Championship with Kerry. He won senior Kerry County Championship medals with Dingle GAA in 1938 and 1941. Independent politicians contest elections without the support of a political party. They have played a continuous role in the politics of the Republic of Ireland since its independence in 1922. Irish National Teachers' Organisation
The Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO) ( ga, Cumann Múinteoirí Éireann), founded in 1868, is the oldest and largest teachers' trade union in Ireland. It represents teachers at primary level in the Republic of Ireland, and at primary and post-primary level in Northern Ireland. The head office is at Parnell Square, Dublin, and there is a Northern Irish office in Belfast. The current INTO President (2022–23) is John Driscoll; John Boyle is the General Secretary and Gerry Murphy is the Northern Secretary. History Origins The union was founded in 1868 with the help and encouragement of Danish-born philanthropist Vere Foster. Seanad Éireann
Seanad Éireann (, ; "Senate of Ireland") is the upper house of the Oireachtas (the Irish legislature), which also comprises the President of Ireland and Dáil Éireann (the lower house). It is commonly called the Seanad or Senate and its members senators (''seanadóirí'' in Irish, singular: ''seanadóir''). Unlike Dáil Éireann, it is not directly elected but consists of a mixture of members chosen by various methods. Its powers are much weaker than those of the Dáil and it can only delay laws with which it disagrees, rather than veto them outright. It can introduce new legislation. The Labour Panel ( ga, An Rolla Oibreachais) is one of five vocational panels which together elect 43 of the 60 members of Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Oireachtas (the legislature of Ireland). The Labour Panel elects eleven senators. Election Article 18 of the Constitution of Ireland provides that 43 of the 60 senators are to be elected from five vocational panels. The Labour Panel is defined in Article 18.7.1º (iii) as "Labour, whether organised or unorganised". The Seanad returning officer maintains a list of nominating bodies for each of the five panels. Candidates may be nominated either by four members of the Oireachtas or by a nominating body. The electorate consists of city and county councillors and current members of the Oireachtas.
