Seward Silver Salmon Derby
Started in 1956, the Seward Silver Salmon Derby is Alaska’s oldest fishing derby. The derby generally opens the second week in August. Participants compete to bring in the largest coho salmon, also known as silver salmon. The fish are weighed and turned in daily. Prize categories *Tagged Fish: Fish are caught and tagged before the start of the derby. The prize for catching a tagged fish can earn up to $50,000. Fishing Tournament
A fishing tournament, or derby, is an organised competition among anglers. Fishing tournaments typically take place as a series of competitive events around or on a clearly defined body of water with specific rules applying to each event. Coho Salmon
The coho salmon (''Oncorhynchus kisutch;'' Karuk: achvuun) is a species of anadromous fish in the salmon family and one of the five Pacific salmon species. Coho salmon are also known as silver salmon or "silvers". The scientific species name is based on the Russian common name ''kizhuch'' (кижуч). Description During their ocean phase, coho salmon have silver sides and dark-blue backs. During their spawning phase, their jaws and teeth become hooked. After entering fresh water, they develop bright-red sides, bluish-green heads and backs, dark bellies and dark spots on their backs. Sexually maturing fish develop a light-pink or rose shading along the belly, and the males may show a slight arching of the back.
