The Severn-Wye Cable Tunnel, also known as the Severn Cable Tunnel, carries high-voltage (400 kV) electricity transmission lines beneath the estuaries of the River Severn and River Wye between Newhouse (Mathern), Monmouthshire and Aust, South Gloucestershire. History To exploit the generating capacity of new power stations being built in the late 1960s at Pembroke (2,000 MW) and Aberthaw ('A' 600 MW, 'B' 1,400 MW), the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) planned to construct 400 kV supergrid lines through South Wales and Gloucestershire to National Grid connection points at Gloucester and Melksham, Wiltshire. The CEGB intended the line to Melksham substation to cross the River Severn at Sharpness using overhead cables. A public inquiry was held in 1967 and objections were raised by the Council for the Preservation of Rural England and several District and Parish Councils. Pembroke B Power Station is a 2,200 MWe natural gas-fired power station near Pembroke in Wales. The power station was officially opened in September 2012 and is the largest gas-fired power station in Europe. It is also the largest power station to be built in the UK since Drax power station came online in 1986. Fawley Tunnel
Fawley Tunnel is a diameter, long tunnel under Southampton Water between Fawley Power Station and Chilling near Warsash. It was constructed between 1962 and 1965 to carry two 400 kV circuits as part of the National Grid. The tunnel was built with a 3 feet 1.125 inch gauge railway to help with maintenance access. The River Medway Cable Tunnels are a pair of tunnels carrying high-voltage electricity transmission lines beneath the lower River Medway between the Isle of Grain and Chetney Marshes, Kent. The Thames Cable Tunnel, also known as the Tilbury – Gravesend Cable Tunnel, is a tunnel carrying high-voltage electrical transmission lines beneath the lower River Thames between Tilbury and Gravesend. It remains the furthest tunnel downstream on the Thames. The Ministry of Power was a United Kingdom government ministry dealing with issues concerning energy. The Ministry of Power (then named Ministry of Fuel and Power) was created on 11 June 1942 from functions separated from the Board of Trade. It took charge of coal production, allocation of fuel supplies, control of energy prices and petrol rationing. These had previously been dealt with by the Secretary for Mines and in the case of petroleum since 1940 by the Secretary for Petroleum. Aberthaw Power Station refers to two decommissioned coal-fired and co-fired biomass power stations on the coast of South Wales, near Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan. They were located at Limpert Bay, near the villages of Gileston and West Aberthaw. The most recent power station on the site, Aberthaw B Power Station, co-fired biomass and as of 2008 had a generating capacity of 1,560 megawatts (MW). The power station closed on 31 March 2020.
