Gene Settles
Spencer "Gene" Settles was a defensive linebacker for the UCLA Bruins during the 1971 - 1974 seasons. In 1974, he was the recipient of the UCLA Bruins' Henry R. Sanders trophy for Most Valuable Player (MVP). Upon graduation in 1970 from B.C. Elmore High School in Houston, Texas, Gene was recruited by Notre Dame, Stanford University, University of Texas, Texas A&M, University of Oklahoma, University of Nebraska, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and others. He began his freshman year as a starting defensive linebacker with the UCLA Bruins in 1971 under the direction of coach Franklin Cullen Pepper Rodgers. According to the UCLA 1972 "The Spirit Of College Football" publication, as a pre-law major sophomore, he was "rated a fine prospect and figures to back up Tom Daniels at RLB. Ron Settles
Ron Settles (June 12, 1959 – June 2, 1981) was a California State University, Long Beach and Banning High School football player who was arrested by the Signal Hill Police Department in 1981 then died while in police custody. The morning after his arrest, Settles was found severely beaten. Police officers claimed they found Settles hanging in his jail cell from a noose created from a mattress cover, from which they cut him down. However, police elected not to take photographic evidence of the hanging and instead only took pictures of Settles on the floor. Also officers refused to testify—pleading the fifth, in what continues to appear to some to have been a conspiratorial 'smokescreen' or cover-up of police brutality. In 1981, a jury in a Los Angeles coroner's inquest ruled that Settles had died 'at the hands of another, other than by accident'. Tawambi Jahmon Settles (born January 19, 1976) is a former American football defensive back who played one season with the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Duke University and attended The McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was also a member of the Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, New York/New Jersey Hitmen, Grand Rapids Rampage, Detroit Fury, Toronto Argonauts, and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Anthony C. Settles (born August 29, 1964) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for the Washington Redskins during the 1987 NFL season. He played college football for Elon. He was a replacement player for the Redskins during the 1987 players' strike. He played in three games and was featured in ''The Year of Scab'' documentary by ESPN. Settles, along with the other replacements, was mentioned in an ESPN documentary titled ''Year of the Scab'', and was the inspiration for the 2000 film '' The Replacements''. Settles Hotel
The Settles Hotel is a historic 15-story hotel located at 200 East Third Street in Big Spring, Texas. Originally completed in 1930, the Settles opened for business October 1, 1930. It operated from 1930 until the early 1980s, and was subsequently abandoned for around 30 years, before reopening in late 2012. The building was purchased by the Settles Hotel Development Corporation in late 2006. Since that time, the SHDC has also acquired adjoining properties, including the Big Spring Boys and Girls Club and the abandoned Greyhound Bus terminal, which was then demolished. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 18, 2013. Hotel Settles is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
