Seth Stein
Seth Avram Stein (born July 12, 1953, in Middletown, Connecticut) is an American geophysicist with an international reputation for his research in plate tectonics, seismology, and space geodesy. He has also done important work in public policy for coping with earthquake hazards. Biography Seth Stein's sister became a lawyer and his brother, Gil, became an archaeologist. Their father was Jerome Leon Stein (1928–2013), a professor of economics at Brown University. After graduating in 1975 with a B.S. in Earth and planetary sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), Seth Stein matriculated at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). There he graduated in geophysics with an M.S. in 1977 and an Ph.D. in 1978. He was inspired by Keiiti Aki at M.I.T. and by Hiroo Kanamori at Caltech. Middletown is a city located in Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States, Located along the Connecticut River, in the central part of the state, it is south of Hartford, Connecticut, Hartford. Orogeny
Orogeny is a mountain building process. An orogeny is an event that takes place at a convergent plate margin when plate motion compresses the margin. An ''orogenic belt'' or ''orogen'' develops as the compressed plate crumples and is uplifted to form one or more mountain ranges. This involves a series of geological processes collectively called orogenesis. These include both structural deformation of existing continental crust and the creation of new continental crust through volcanism. Magma rising in the orogen carries less dense material upwards while leaving more dense material behind, resulting in compositional differentiation of Earth's lithosphere ( crust and uppermost mantle). The Australian Plate is a major tectonic plate in the eastern and, largely, southern hemispheres. Originally a part of the ancient continent of Gondwana, Australia remained connected to India and Antarctica until approximately when India broke away and began moving north. San Andreas Fault
The San Andreas Fault is a continental transform fault that extends roughly through California. It forms the tectonics, tectonic boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate, and its motion is Fault (geology)#Strike-slip faults, right-lateral strike-slip (horizontal). William Mullen (journalist)
William Mullen (born October 9, 1944) was a reporter and correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, which he joined in 1967 and retired from in 2012. In 1972, he worked undercover in the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, uncovering massive evidence of voting irregularities that resulted in 82 election officials being indicted by the federal government. The exposé was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for general local reporting in 1973.
