Sessions 1981-83
''Sessions 1981-83'' is an album by hardcore punk band Void. It was released in 2011. The album compiles three sessions as well as a live performance. 29 of the 34 songs on the album had not been previously released, officially. Background The tapes that the album were remastered from were discovered by Ian MacKaye as he was organizing Dischord's collection. The first 20 tracks were recorded in November 1981 at Hit and Run Studios in Rockville, Maryland and were used by the band as a demo tape. Tracks 21-30 were recorded at Inner Ear Studios in December 1981; tracks 21, 22, and 23 would be used in the ''Flex Your Head'' label album. 31 & 32 two were recorded in June 1982 during the recordings for the Faith/Void split album, again at Inner Ear studios. The final two tracks are live recordings of the band during the end stages of their existence in late 1983. Void (band)
Void was an American hardcore punk band formed in Columbia, Maryland, in 1980. The group was a pioneering force in the thriving D.C. Hardcore scene in Washington D.C. during the early 1980s, successfully combining elements of punk with heavy metal in a style that was accepted by the scene's otherwise exclusive community. Void's punk metal fusion sound was marked by guitarist Bubba Dupree's innovative guitar work and the "unhinged" vocals of John Weiffenbach, which resonated in the band's chaotic but popular live performances. Inner Ear Studios
Inner Ear Studios is a recording studio founded in Arlington County, Virginia, Arlington, Virginia that has been in operation since the late 1970s. Originally started in founder Don Zientara's basement, the studio spent many years on South Oakland St. in Arlington. The studio is now back in Don’s basement, and has been in continuous operation for over 40 years. During that time, virtually all of Washington, DC's most widely recognized and acclaimed bands have recorded there. The studio is known for its association with the Washington, D.C. hardcore scene. History The studio was started by Zientara in his own home in Arlington in the late 1970s. ''Pitchfork'' (formerly ''Pitchfork Media'') is an American online music publication (currently owned by Condé Nast) that was launched in 1995 by writer Ryan Schreiber as an independent music blog. Schreiber started Pitchfork while working at a record store in suburban Minneapolis, and the website earned a reputation for its extensive coverage of indie rock music. MetalSucks is a heavy metal music-themed news website. The site features reviews, interviews, information on latest metal releases and blog-like posts from the writers, most notably Vince Neilstein and Axl Rosenberg. History The site was founded in December 2006 by authors Ben Umanov and Matthew Goldenberg who use the pen names Vince Neilstein and Axl Rosenberg. In April 2009, MetalSucks was awarded Metal Hammer's Web of Death Award for "Best Reviews" for its "honest, insightful, unpretentious – and fun – reviews." Faith/Void Split
The ''Faith/Void Split LP'' is a split album by Washington D.C. hardcore groups Void and the Faith, released on Dischord Records in 1982. Void was one of the earliest examples of hardcore/metal crossover with their chaotic musical approach cited as particularly influential. Kurt Cobain listed the album in his top fifty albums of all time. Background and influence The Faith and Void were hardcore bands from Washington D.C., both with few releases (this is Void's only release throughout the band's existence), but a relatively large underground following among punk and hardcore punk fans.
