Serve The People! (novel)
''Serve the People!'' ( zh, 为人民服务) is a 2005 novel by Yan Lianke. The English version, translated by Julia Lovell, was published in 2010 by Black Cat/Grove Atlantic, Grove. Plot Set during the Cultural Revolution, at the peak of Mao Zedong's cult of personality, the cult of personality of Chairman Mao, the novel tells the story of an affair between the Liu Lian, the wife of a powerful military commander, and a young peasant soldier, Wu Dawang. Liu Lian tells Wu Dawang that whenever she removes the household's wooden 'Serve the People!' sign from its usual place on the dinner table, he must attend to her needs in the bedroom. Liu Lian discovers that destroying her absent husband's sacred Mao icons - such as the Little Red Book and statues of the Chairman - turns her on. ''Serve the People'' () is a 2022 South Korean romantic drama film, written and directed by Jang Cheol-soo and starring Yeon Woo-jin, Ji An (지안), Jo Sung-ha and Kim Ji-chul. Based on the eponymous novel by Chinese writer Yan Lianke, it depicts a romance between Mu Gwang, a model soldier, and Su-ryun, the young wife of the division commander and the inner conflicts of Mu Gwang. Julia Lovell
Julia Lovell (born 1975) is a British scholar and prize-winning author and translator focusing on China. Life and career Lovell is professor of Modern Chinese History and Literature at Birkbeck, University of London, where her research has been focused principally on the relationship between culture (specifically, literature, architecture, historiography and sport) and modern Chinese nation-building. Lovell's books include ''The Politics of Cultural Capital: China's Quest for a Nobel Prize in Literature'' (University of Hawaii Press, 2006); ''The Great Wall: China Against the World 1000 BC – AD 2000'' (Atlantic Books, 2006); and ''The Opium War: Drugs, Dreams and the Making of China'' (Picador, 2011). Zhang Side () (April 19, 1915 – September 5, 1944) was a Communist Party of China, Chinese Communist soldier killed during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Life Zhang Side was born in a poor tenant-peasant family of Hanjiawan, Liuhechang, Yilong County, Sichuan Province on April 19 (the sixth day of third lunar month), 1915. Before he was one year old, his mother died. He was brought up by his aunt. When he was 12 years old, he began to feed the cattle and mow grasses for the landlord.
