Serraninae
The Serraninae is a subfamily of perciform ray-finned fishes in the family Serranidae. It is made up of ten genera and 87 species. Characters The fishes in the subfamily Serraninae, the serranines, are small species within the family Serranidae. They generally have ten spines in their dorsal fins and seven soft rays in their anal fins. They are also characterised by the fin spines being unserrated. The genera within the Serraninae are separated by the counts of the soft rays in the dorsal fin. Genera The following genera are classified within the Serraninae: * '' Bullisichthys'' Rivas, 1971 * ''Centropristis'' Cuvier, 1829 * '' Chelidoperca'' Boulenger, 1895 * ''Cratinus'' Steindachner, 1878 * '' Diplectrum'' Holbrook, 1855 * '' Dules'' Cuvier, 1829 * ''Hypoplectrus'' Gill, 1861 * ''Paralabrax'' Girard, 1856 * '' Parasphyraenops'' T.H. Bean, 1912 * '' Schultzea'' Woods, 1958 * '' Serraniculus'' Ginsburg, 1952 * ''Serranus'' Cuvier, 1816 Taxonomy The Anthiinae are sometime ...

Paralabrax
''Paralabrax'' is a genus of fishes in the family Serranidae. They are known commonly as rock basses.Pondella, D. J., et al. (2003)The phylogeny of ''Paralabrax'' (Perciformes: Serranidae) and allied taxa inferred from partial 16S and 12S mitochondrial ribosomal DNA sequences.''Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution'' 29, 176-84. The nine species in the genus are native to rocky reef habitat in the eastern Pacific and western Atlantic Oceans, where they are often dominant predators in the ecosystem. They are also commercially important in local fisheries. Biology Like many fish in the family Serranidae, some ''Paralabrax'' species are hermaphrodites, specifically protogynous hermaphrodites, which are female when young and eventually change into males. Others are gonochores, with individuals being either male or female and never changing sex. Gonochores in this genus are thought to be "secondary gonochores", species with ancestors that were hermaphrodites and lost the ability to ...

Schultzea
The school bass (''Schultzea beta'') is a species of marine ray-finned fish, it is the only member of the monotypic genus ''Schultzea'' which is part of the subfamily Serraninae which itself is classified within the family Serranidae, along with the anthias and groupers. It is found in the western central Atlantic Ocean. This species is found in deeper waters near coral reefswhere it forms small groups which feed on plankton. The school bass is a synchronous hermaphrodite. The generic name honours the American ichthyologist Leonard Peter Schultz (1901-1986) who was Curator of Fishes at the United States National Museum who examined the specimens described by Loren P. Woods (1914-1979) as ''Schultzea campachanus'', which was later shown to be a synonym A synonym is a word, morpheme, or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word, morpheme, or phrase in a given language.
