Josiah Wise (born July 9, 1988), known professionally as serpentwithfeet, is an experimental musician based in Brooklyn, New York City. Wise released the EP ''Blisters'' in 2016, his debut studio album ''soil'' in 2018, his second EP ''Apparition'' in 2020, and his second studio album ''Deacon'' in 2021. Early life Wise was raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He grew up in a religious family; his father owned a Christian bookstore and his mother was a choir director. Wise joined the church choir as a child and grew up with classical and gospel music as a primary influence. When he was 11 years old his mother asked him if he wanted to audition for the Maryland State Boychoir and he refused, so she signed him up anyway and he ended up loving it. This was his introduction to classical vocal music. He realized from this experience that there was a lack of diversity in the choir and there was "not much room for the black voice." Deacon (album)
''Deacon'' (stylized in all caps) is the second studio album by American singer and songwriter Serpentwithfeet. It was released on March 26, 2021, by Secretly Canadian. Background and release A year after the release of Serpentwithfeet's debut studio album ''Soil'' (2018), he released a single titled "Receipts" with singer and rapper Ty Dolla Sign. They further worked on the latter's album ''Featuring Ty Dolla Sign'' (2020), with the single "Ego Death" along with rapper Kanye West, singer-songwriter FKA Twigs, and record producer Skrillex. Serpentwithfeet also contributed his vocals on "Serpentwithfeet Interlude" on the same album. On the same year, he released an extended play titled ''Apparition'' on April 30. On January 25, 2021, Serpentwithfeet announced the release date of the album alongside the single "Fellowship", co-produced by musicians Sampha and Lil Silva. ''Soil'' (stylized in all lowercase) is the debut studio album by American singer and songwriter Serpentwithfeet. It was released on June 8, 2018, by Secretly Canadian and Tri Angle. Critical reception ''Soil'' received widespread acclaim from critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 87, based on 15 reviews. Dmitry Teckel of '' Clash'' described the album as "magical" and called it "presents love as a great ritual of universal joy". Sasha Geffen of ''Pitchfork'' said, "With ''soil'', serpentwithfeet deeply engages with the complex membranes between the self and a loved one, the self and the world.
