Sergio Giral
Sergio Giral (born 2 January 1937) is a Cuban-American film writer and director. He was raised in New York City, as an aspiring young painter in the days of the Beatnik generation. In 1962, Oscar-winning cinematographer Nestor Almendros invited Giral to work together at the ICAIC (The Cuban Film Institute). It was there, after a series of shorts and documentaries, that Giral filmed a trilogy (''The Other Francisco'', ''Rancheador'' and ''Maluala'') about slavery in 19th Century Cuba and the Caribbean. ''The Other Francisco'' was entered into the 9th Moscow International Film Festival where it won a Diploma. In 1991 Giral returned to the United States. He resides in Miami. ''Plácido'' is a 1961 Spanish black comedy film directed by Luis García Berlanga. It was nominated to the Academy Awards, Academy Award as Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Foreign Language Film. It was also entered into the 1962 Cannes Film Festival. Plot In a small provincial town, a group of "pious" women who are fond of ostentatiously practicing charity organize a Christmas campaign under the motto "Feed a poor man at your table." Cinema Of Cuba
Cinema arrived in Cuba at the beginning of the 20th century. Before the Cuban Revolution of 1959, about 80 full-length films were produced in Cuba. Most of these films were melodramas. Following the revolution, Cuba entered what is considered the "Golden age" of Cuban cinema. Early stages After being popularised by the brothers Louis Jean and Auguste Marie Lumière, the cinematographe traveled through several capital cities in different American countries before arriving in Havana, which occurred on January 24, 1897. It was brought from Mexico by Gabriel Veyre. The first presentation was offered at Paseo del Prado #126, just aside the Teatro Tacón.
