Sergei Tarakanov
Sergei Nikolayevich Tarakanov (alternative spellings: Serguei, Sergey) (russian: Серге́й Николаевич Тараканов; born 25 April 1958 in Lodeynoye Pole, Leningrad Oblast, Russian SFSR, USSR) is a Russian retired professional basketball player. During his playing career, he was a 2.03 m (6'8") tall small forward-power forward. Club career Tarakanov played at the club level with Spartak Leningrad (1975–1979), CSKA Moscow (1979–1990, winning 7 times the Soviet Basketball League championship), the German club Ludwisburg Stuttgart (1990–1991), and the Belgian club Liège Basket (1991–1992). National team career Tarakanov was a member of the senior Soviet national team from 1979 to 1990. Lodeynoye Pole
Lodeynoye Pole (russian: Лоде́йное По́ле, lit. ''the field of boats'') is a town and the administrative center of Lodeynopolsky District in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, located on the left bank of the Svir River (Lake Ladoga's basin) northeast of St. Petersburg. Population: 21,400 (1972). History It was founded in 1702 on the spot of the village of Mokrishvitsa, where Peter the Great had established the Olonets Shipyard. In 1703, the first ship of the Baltic Fleet was built here—a 28-cannon frigate called ''Shtandart''. In 1704, six more frigates, four shnyavas, four galleys, and twenty-four semi-galleys were constructed, which would form the first Russian squadron in the Baltic Sea. Basketball at the 1988 Summer Olympics was the twelfth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. It took place at the Jamsil Gymnasium in Seoul, South Korea from 17 September to 30 September 1988. The United States won the gold medal in the women's competition, repeating their performance from the 1984 tournament. In the men's tournament, the Soviet Union took home their second gold medal in the team's history for this event. In the team, Baltic basketballers were overrepresented: Sabonis, Chomičius, Kurtinaitis and Marčiulionis were Lithuanian, Miglinieks was Latvian, and Kaj Sokk was Estonian.
