Sergei Safronov (fighter Pilot)
Sergei Ivanovich Safronov (russian: Серге́й Ива́нович Сафро́нов; 25 March 1930 – 1 May 1960) was a senior lieutenant in the Soviet Air Defense Forces. Safronov, a fighter pilot, was shot down by a friendly surface-to-air missile while attempting to intercept Gary Powers' U-2, conducting a reconnaissance mission. Biography Safronov was born on 25 March 1930 in Gus-Khrustalny and graduated from the town's School No. 1 (later School No. 12) in 1948. He joined the Soviet Air Forces and graduated from the Borisoglebsk Military Aviation School of Pilots, serving with the 764th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Soviet Air Defence Forces at Bolshoye Savino Airport from 1952. In the 1960 U-2 incident he and his flight leader, deputy squadron commander Captain Boris Ayvazyan were vectored to intercept Gary Powers' U-2 with their MiG-19 fighters. Gus-Khrustalny (russian: Гусь-Хруста́льный) is a town in Vladimir Oblast, Russia, located on the Gus River (a tributary of the Oka River) south of Vladimir, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: 65,000 (1970); 40,000 (1939); 17,900 (1926). Etymology The name of the town may be translated as "crystal goose", for it is known as one of the oldest centers of glass industry in Russia and stands on the Gus River. There are reasons to believe that its name is not derived from ''goose'' directly, but rather from the common Slavic term ''"goose"'' (in the respective languages) for a large (up to several gallons) bottle. It is the only airport in Perm Krai with scheduled commercial flights, and serves as Perm's main civilian airport, with bus and minibus services operating during the daytime to the city's main bus terminus. Mikoyan MiG-31
The Mikoyan MiG-31 (russian: link=no, Микоян МиГ-31; NATO reporting name: Foxhound) is a supersonic interceptor aircraft that was developed for use by the Soviet Air Forces. The aircraft was designed by the Mikoyan design bureau as a replacement for the earlier Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25, MiG-25 "Foxbat"; the MiG-31 is based on and shares design elements with the MiG-25. The MiG-31 is among the fastest combat jets in the world. It continues to be operated by the Russian Air Force and the Kazakh Air Defense Forces, Kazakh Air Force following the end of the Cold War and the Dissolution of the Soviet Union, collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
