Serbian Constitutional Referendum, 1992
A referendum on state symbols was held in the Republic of Serbia on 31 May 1992. The referendum decided the flag, the national anthem and the coat of arms. Although the referendum failed due to low turnout, the National Assembly recommended that the red star be removed from the Serbian flag on 21 June. Background The referendum was planned since 1991. For the state flag, the choice was to either keep the flag with the red star or to remove it. For the coat of arms, the choice was to keep the Serbian shield with cross and firesteels or to include the bicephalic eagle of the Nemanjić dynasty. For the anthem, '' Bože pravde'' and ''Marš na Drinu'' were offered. The results showed a majority of voters preferred keeping the red star on the flag, to keep the Serbian shield with firesteels, and choosing Marš na Drinu as the anthem. Marš Na Drinu
The ''March to the Drina'' ( sr-Cyr, Марш на Дрину, ) is a Serbian patriotic march which was composed by Stanislav Binički during World War I. Binički dedicated it to his favourite commander in the Serbian Army, Col. Milivoje Stojanović, who had fought during the Battle of Cer, but was killed later in the Battle of Kolubara. The song experienced widespread popularity during and after the war and came to be seen by Serbs as a symbol of resistance to the Central Powers. Following World War II, it was popular in Socialist Yugoslavia where a single release in 1964 achieved Gold Record status. The march was played at the presentation ceremony for the Nobel Prize in Literature when Yugoslav writer Ivo Andrić was named a Nobel laureate in 1961. Serbian lyrics to the song were written many decades after Binički composed it, by poet and journalist Miloje Popović, in 1964 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Cer. Nemanjić Dynasty
The House of Nemanjić ( sr-Cyrl, Немањић, Немањићи; Nemanjić, Nemanjići, ) was the most prominent dynasty of Serbia in the Middle Ages. This princely, royal, and later imperial house produced twelve Serbian monarchs, who ruled between 1166 and 1371. Its progenitor was Stefan Nemanja, scion of a cadet branch of the Vukanović dynasty (1101–1166). After Nemanja, all monarchs used '' Stefan'' as a personal name, or a ruler's name, a tradition adopted for the royal pretensions. The monarchs began as Grand Princes, and with the crowning of Stefan Nemanjić in 1217, the realm was promoted to a Kingdom, and the Serbian Orthodox Church was established in 1219. In 1346, Stefan Dušan was crowned ''Emperor of the Serbs and Greeks'', and the Archbishopric of Serbia was elevated to a Patriarchate.
